  • Time To Try The Blues

May be of passing interest to some.

I've played four or five times with this band and am now an official member as opposed to a dep.

We are all busy high achieving people so only play once every two months or so. Yesterday we spent a day in a local studio and some of the results are here. A pleasing day for people still reaching out to touch each other's psyche.

First time I've played any thing Blues-y and I'm a piano boy , really. So to have to get on a big organ and push something out of merit doesn't come easy at first.

I had a fresh out of the box D4 from TopCubans this week - first time I've had any floating loot to purchase anything for ages - and it was ghastly. It wasn't sitting back on the beach in Italy with dark specs, an ice lolly and fabulous curves. It was actually smeared in tummy gel and having a scan.

It was what some of you call 'sick' and it damn well was.

I have a RASCC fresh from another box looking at me on the kitchen table and coaxing me into the woods. I'd better oblige.

Not searching muso brownie points. There's some well meandering stuff in here.

Fact is that getting together with a bunch of blokes - and sometimes the odd lady - in a studio, having a laugh and walking away with a disc which is you - warts and all - is a bloody marvellous feeling.

I'm off with my RASCC with a smile, and then I'm out muso whoring with the Royal assent til dusk.

    Have a nice day x

I have picked up 20 ocarinas as a wider opportunities bung from the local education authority. We could have a right old ball as an emerging ensemble.

My first touring band was a blues band. Great times. Nothing like playing song three chords strong and 12 bars long!

Always a great read, your posts, and always a great listen, when your music is linked. Have fun playing the blues... (is that an oxymoron?)
Business in the front. Party in the back.

                      Nice, men.

My RASCC was top notch so I took half an hour off after the first and attacked another. It was delicious.

Larry. You are gigging again. Post some.

I've been with the writing band this afters and... I know it loses in the translation... but we knocked out a hyper funky ethereal thing that is like Shaft and a saucy lady involved in mouth work in the back of a taxi at LAX.

Laughing insanely at the stuff you come up with in practice space between consenting players is a serious anti-depressant. If I can get this thing off my iPhone I'll splodge it here somehow.

I have played so many gigs in so many shit places, often for peanuts, to people who weren't interested that to be in a room writing material and preparing to record it and gig for the first time as a band is an absolute ABSOLUTE joy.

I have always considered myself a blues man first and spent my life trying to get good tone, very easy to play bad blues, very hard to play blues that moves people.

Playing blues one can suffer a lot of derision and clich?d comments from people who don't know, and widdlers who can throw out licks at a million miles an hour, keep the faith and master when not to play

One doesn't choose blues, it chooses you.

It's funny, Monk, but I just try my hand at as many different styles as I can.

I'm not lost up my own bottom. People assume you are if you write about it, as here. I have friends who are much better players than I but I try to spend time playing with people who are seriously keen about playing because it rubs off.

One of these better players said to me yesterday that music - playing it - is good and bad medicine. I'd never heard that before and it makes total sense.

I'm still on a high today after a seriously good and funny weekend. What wish all the tosh I have to parry, and all.
