  • Romeo vs Romeo ...Wide Churchill vs Duke

As Pete mentioned earlier we got together on Friday, opened up our travel humi's and decided on a path.

Neither of us had smoked a wide Churchill before and both of us had not smoked a Duke for ages, since we had two of each between us a little comparison seemed in order.

First up the wide Churchill. Both sticks were from different sources/boxes so it was interesting to compare. Both had good construction but felt light for their size. This observation was confirmed with a very light pre-draw, both of us felt too light. When I cut mine I could see 5 veins inside, not what I call good quality control.

I think I speak for both of us as we had very similar experiences. This cigar came on and off throughout. It would have a good cm followed by a bad one. Most of this was down to it simply being under-filled. A decently rolled one would have been a lot better. When it was good it was very nice, R and J profile, creamy smoke. Still very young but a couple of years will sort this out nicely. Overall my experience was far too inconsistent to be enjoyable however a fully filled WC with a couple of years on it would be a very nice smoke. As this experience was shared by both of us from two different boxes it does not bode well. Anyone else care to share their experience on this subject?

Onto the Duke. These had a year or so on them now. This was chalk and cheese. Even though mine was a little tight the quality of the smoke was miles ahead of the WC. Smooth, creamy with a great, subtle R and J profile.

I am in no hurry to smoke another WC (although maybe in a year or two) however I am delighted that I have a few Dukes put down and encourage anyone else to do so while they are still relativity cheap and freely available.

Some may say this isn't a fair comparison but consider that they have nearly the same retail price (Cgars) Duke ?16.99, WC ?14.99. IMHO the Duke will go on to be one of the great EL's for mid term smoking (2-10 years) while the WC is just another (in a long list of) not quite R and J's (a missed opportunity as it appears to be built down to a price )

Pete ...please chip in and fill in any gaps.

as the monkey man said we were both a little disappointed with the wide churchill underfilled with little smoke and not that intresting but yes they are young and with a few years on them and if you can find a proper filled one it would be worth trying again .
The Duke is a altogether different animal first you have to say it is a great looking cigar with a rich and creamy taste great smelling smoke and very moorish had a few burn issues but nothing you can not live with the one i smoked had about 15 months on it and imo are getting better all the time. i also have 7-8 left and am not going to smoke one for 6 months or so and am looking forword to see how these develop over the next few years i think i will also get another box and leave them alone for 5-6 years.

on a side note monkey has the perfect out door venue for a herf so when the sun comes back next year we should try to get a get together there.

o and monkey them trinis are from 05 so even better me thinks and will be two great cigars to try side by side

      Shhuussshh you guys.

The 'Duke' is one of my all time favs.
I don't want all these forum newbies getting wise and buying up the remaining stock before I get a new box myself!

I'm definitely going to have to give the Duke another go. The only one I had was reasonable (at the very best) for flavour, and was woefully constructed... It started off like trying to suck a football through a straw, and ended up more aking to sucking a small hatchback up one... As a result, I wasn't even getting any smoke...

Had the flavour been a winner I'd have rushed out and got another one straight away (on account that they couldn't all be plugged... but maybe they are).

Still, one cigar is rarely a great way to judge a cigar (especially if it's a Cuban with construction issues...) I'm giving it until 2011 and then giving it another shot.

I have to echo Si with my only Duke experience. There was something there but just such hard work. I've still two left in the humi which I got from Lee which I'll give a year to now and then see how they go.

From Monkey's report the RyJ WC I'll just say away from for now!

Worth noting that the other review thread of the WC's is very positive, ours would have been pretty positive if both our sticks (from two different boxes) hadn't been badly under-filled.

Shame the Duke appears to have significant consistency issues as when they are good they are great!

Even allowing for all the issues and age allowance IMHO the Duke blows the WC away every time.

on a recent trip to germany called in to luxemburg and got a box of 10 dukes and short churchills and a few wide churchill. tried the duke and loved it and the shorts have been smoking well for the last 6 months. but my mate smoked his wc and had alot of problems with the draw after reading this im gonna leave the wide one alone for a while and enjoy my shorts and the odd duke.
