Bolivar — Bonitas
Size: 126mm x 40 — Londres
Smoke time: 63mins

Box date: PO8-MAY-07

This cigar might be described as an entry level to the Bolivar range, although Forum ‘older hands' would possibly argue that isn’t fully representative of the power and flavour depth associated with the brand. This is possibly true, as a relative beginner I will confess to having had some ‘managing’ issues with the slightly larger Petit Coronas and the Royal Coronas. Discontinued in 2009 this cigar was the last remaining Cuban Londres, although why Habanos would want to de-list an 8.4 rated cigar defies description.

Appearance: Firm to the touch, with a rich brown wrapper carrying some fairly prominent raised veins and signs of some crystalisation. Slighty slimmerer than a petit coronas the cigar has a very distinguished and elegant look to it and fits easily to hand.

Construction: No real burn or draw problems whatsoever. The initial burn started a little crookedly but quickly righted itself. The draw was slightly resistive, which I prefer giving clouds of languid, aromatic smoke. The mid-grey ash stayed compact and firm throughout the entire smoke, and needed only two tap-offs (see photos). No re-lights, no corrections.

Flavour: First hit and you knows she’s a Cuban. Bright floral notes with that distinctive lemon ‘twang’ blended into burnt sugars and honey. Progress and the flavours become deeper and woodier — but still with an underlying sweetness and crispness — with the tobacco strength becoming more manifest about the half way mark. In the final third the wood flavours mellow out and the power increases and the tastes pick-up a through-the-nose pepperiness intensified by deep ‘Americano’ coffee like bitterness. Bloody marvelous!

Overall: A great afternoon’s smoke. Maybe not big enough or rich enough for after dinner smoking but certainly a perfect companion to relax with during the morning or anytime throughout the day.
Excellent little cigar well worth the trying IMHO.
