  • Urgent help required Re Email

My email service provider - ukonline is shutting up shop next Friday & with it goes my first and (effectively) only ever business & personal email address for the past 10 years (it's absolutely NOT transferable, so they say).

My back-up plan was to change to my already existing BTinternet address which I've hardly used & only then on my now effectively kaput office PC. However I just cannot get it to run on my now sole computer - a laptop running Vista & Mozilla Thunderbird, despite having spent the best part of an hour yesterday with the assistance of BT's helpline and far more time after.

As an alternative I've set up a gmail account but I cant get that to work with Thunderbird either.

I assume the problem (or problems) are with Thunderbird but a) the company that installed & set it up for me have recently moved & are so far uncontactable b) I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing myself & find Mozilla's help system makes anything similar from Microsoft seem simple and straightforward.

With the potential of lbeing cut off from the world in a week's time I'm beginning to panic. Is there anyone out there who knows about these things, or knows someone who does? From my long discussions with BT yesterday, my problems seem too complex to sort over the phone.

Have you enabled IMAP in the gmail settings? On my phone at the moment but if that doesn't work let me know.
Unsure about the BT email I'm afraid. My girlfriend's mother uses that and I had severe trouble setting up her email client as BT seemed to make it difficult.
    I'd stick with gmail tbh.

    [EDIT]
This link should hopefully take you to the setting in Gmail you need. I'd recommend using IMAP rather than POP as you're less likely to lose anything. There's a link on that page explaining how to set it up.

Don't stress! We'll get you sorted.

      Thanks.

I'm ditching the BT email address - I've had nothing but problems with it, & I see I'm not alone.

I've now managed to get Thunderbird to "read" gmail", altghough it appears in a separate folder ("gmail") to my existing inbox in the Local folder despite having the "Global Wotsit" option ticked. I can live with that, although I'd rather have all my messages in a single inbox.

I'm pretty certain I have IMAP enable - the server is "imap@gmail.com"

Just seen your edit - I'll check the link.

      Thanks again.

(Bloody SKY - they're the one's causing me the problems by buyining uknoline & closing it just like that. There's talk of bringing in legislation so that one never has to lose one's email address - similar to what was done for mobile numbers)

Cycle through to 'Unified folders' where the red arrow is pointing, using the arrows to get your unified inbox.
