  • Country Sporters!

Who here enjoys a good bit of countryside style sport?

I'm getting into shooting (game and clays), and also enjoy fishing particularly salmon. I also enjoy a good walk, which is underrated in my opinion!

Any others interested in a bit of sport?

    Country Sports

    Hello there JT,

I certainly enjoy country sports. I too am a shooter, both clay and game, and I try to go as often as I can, time and finances depending. I also like to follow my local hunt on foot - although I do ride, it would be impractical for me to have a horse at the moment, given that I work so far from home.

Why do I like country sports? I like the tradition and the etiquette attached with them, and sadly lacking in a number of other sports.

Never actually done a lot of fishing, although I would like to learn someday, although I should appreciate an experienced hand showing me the ropes, as I imagine there would be a lot of bad habits that one could acquire very quickly.

IMHO fishing should be done with a 1/4 ounce of Semtex & a net...
walkings O.K. if your carrying a gun or going to the Pub but....

Well, if that was ever a possibility (and if I ever get given some time off at work) I for one would bite your arm off!! Would have to find some way to reciprocate for such an offer.....!

big contingents of our uk cousins now come over for various hunts here since your ban was introduced - the way things are shaping here we could follow in the foreseeable future. a ban on stag was introduced last summer.

Sporting clays. The odd pheasant and other game. Large calibre rifle. Black powder handgun. Etc.
"In Italy for 30 years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love, they had 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock!"

Bit of sporting and Skeet, also pigeon and Grey Squirrel once a year for conservation purposes on a country estate/organised shoot.

I am also a bird watcher mainly waders and coastal birds, love a good walk anywhere and love to see the hunts about.

Also any form of shooting and gun ownership is an interest, never been into fishing but i can see the appeal to some.

Unless all forms of the country/outdoor persuits stick together they will all go the way of the ban of hunting with hounds and pistol/semi auto rifle ownership.

Beats sitting in front of the T.v any day of the week in my opinion.

Another keen shooter here (fully paid up member of BASC): mainly sporting clays, but the occasional small game shoot for a top day out.

I too enjoy walking, especially hiking in the Lake District and, more recently, the Highlands. The Cotswolds and Brecon Beacons are also frequent haunts near to 'home'. Dartmoor, however, still fills me with dread after training there - doesn't stop me from getting onto it as often as possible though.

I've even tried my hand a Beagling - the upside of having a Squadron Officer at Dartmouth who was a very keen Beagler (if that is indeed the word).

Clays and a few pigeon. I haven't shot for quite a while though as I couldn't shoot whilst pregnant and haven't had time since.
