I'm not a huge fan of Champagne but I'm beginning to enjoy the learning curve..had a bit of a celebration last night & my old mukka provided the 'fizzy'.
It was Philiponnat, Brut, 1990 Clos de Goisses... it was "damn fine splendid" to quote another guest...& I thought so too.
Where does this 'rate' on the 1 to 10 list? I've not heard of it before..

A top-drawer choice!

Big, bold and, unusually for a champagne... quite meaty.

Bit of a bugger to source these days (unless you're near Epernay), the 85 and the 96 are their most sought after years (but that's true of most champagnes).

If you liked that one, keep an eye out for:
The Dom P?rignon Oenotheque 1990, or
Billecart-Salmon Brut Cuv?e Nicolas Fran?ois Billecart 1996

Slightly easier to source and bloody good too (Esp the DP - IMHO).

Hi Cat, last of the Monte A's.. I thought they might kill the champagne but a it wasn't one of the 'really fizzy' ones & it had a great apple-iness to it...my friend actually mentioned a Billecart as one of his favourites...he can bring that next time..

Mine too (among FAR too many others).
It's a weakness I'm afraid... a terrible and rather costly affliction.
My Doctor thinks I should cut down... the economic policies of the last government tried to force me... but... bravely, I battle on.

I couldn't agree more about the weakness..but I shall hold off & allow my friend the pleasure of introducing new vintages to me..he retired from SSL when they were taken over by Reckitt Benckiser & now devotes 24/7 into his passion & he's now getting serious about CC's... what a good mate he's turned out to be .
