  • My Whisky Collection

Okay then guys, bit of a brain dump and plenty of pics so apologies in advance.

Since I really started getting into malts about 2 years ago I decided to keep the box from every bottle I bought along with some tasting notes.
I'm was bored and snowed in a few weeks back so I decided to get all these boxes out and get some snaps.

Without further ado we'll start with these more regular ones:

    Left to right:
Glenlivet 12: 6/10 - A reasonable drink but no real identity and not enough depth of flavour for my liking
Macallan 10: 7/10 - Nice and smooth, quite floral and citrus
Macallan Fine Oak: 8/10 - Like the 10 year but with a bit more complexity
Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban: 8/10 - This is the one that really got me into "finishes", this is similar to the standard Glen that everyone knows but the port finish gives it a really special depth and complexity; well worth looking out for.

Now onto the next slightly more unusual bunch:

Yamazaki 10: 8/10 - I only bought this because I'd seen it in Yakuza (PS2 game) and thought it would be cool. Very pleasantly surprised, one of the smoothest whiskys I've ever tried.
Highland Park 12: 9/10 - Sensational stuff, this lasted about a week.
Balvenie Doublewood: 9/10 - One of me favourites, I've had three bottles of the stuff now and it always delivers. Sublime and subtle flavours and very smooth.

Now for the peaty island boys:

Bruichladdich Resurrection 2001: 8/10 - A young and punchy whisky with interesting combination of peat, smoke and more highland floral notes.
Laphroiag 10: 8/10 - What needs to be said? An undisputed classic albeit an acquired taste. Like drinking TCP filtered through a bag of peat - lovely!
Bruichladdich Rocks: 9/10 - Wonderful stuff, more complex than resurrection and gets the smoke/peat balance just right IMO

Now things start to get pricey, after a trip to Edinburgh and some expert tasting sessions I discovered the wonderful world of cask strength whisky! :

Old Malt Cask Glenlivet 13: 9/10 - One of the finest whiskys I've ever tasted, light and floral with tons of citrus then a warm cask strength punch at the end.
Glenfarclas 105: 8/10 - After the old malt cask offering this was a slight let down but still bloody brilliant.

And best for last of the casks my absolute fave:

Aberlour A'bunadh Batch 28 & 29: 10/10 - Simply sensational, again lots of citrus and honey notes with a deep, warm and lasting finish - like a party in your mouth!

Finally my latest addition; Jim Murray's world whisky of the year 2011

At first I was a little disappointed as I'm used to the warmth and punch of a cask strength. Given time to linger in the mouth and properly appreciate the flavour though it's quality shows through. Smoother than a smooth thing with a touch of peat, light citrus and almost a green tea hint to it. 9/10

Anyhow. Hopefully this is interesting to some of you and enjoy your whisky.

Superbrother great stuff, thanks for the pics, very interesting. I got a bottle of the Macallan 10 year old (sherry cask) for Xmas, so looking forward to opening it, I hear the 18yr old is meant to be awesome!

I tried some Macallan 15 year at a hotel bar recently - personally I couldn't distinguish that much difference from the 10 year given the price differential.
18 year however I am yet to try.

Blimey great stuff superbrother. I'm fairly new to the delights of whiskey, so a few pointers are always good

          Varied collection.

Nice selection of drams there mate. A couple of my favourites are the 105 and the Quinta Ruban.

Regarding the Balvenie Doublewood; try and get a drink of the 15 YO Balvenie, as this is one of the nicest releases they do IMO.

I did notice a couple of the Islays in your collection, have you had a chance to try the lagavulin yet?

Nice post and pics, I possibly disagree with you on a few of your scores but life would be boring of we all thought the same

What kinds of flavours do you prefer in a whisky? I'd certainly recommend Dalmore Gran Reserva as a fantastic malt to go along with a cigar.

I assume from the outer tube that your Bruichladdich Rocks is from the original one-off bottling before they made it into a regular production blend?

I don't drink a lot of whisky, but got through my first bottle of the original release very quickly I loved it so much and was very disappointed to find it was a limited bottling & that Sainsbury's were no longer selling it. I thus contacted the distillery direct to see if they could point me in the direction of someone with supplies & they told me they were now making it on a regular basis.

Sure enough it later turned up on the Sainmsbury's shelves again, this time in an all B&W tube, but to my relatively untutored pallette, it's not a patch on the orriginal - lacks all the vibrancy, freshness & salty tang as promised by the picture on the tube and delivered by my first bottle.

Thanks for all the comments chaps; time for answers:

whisky77 - I've tried Lagavulin in an Edinburgh bar after a few too many others so I don't really remember that much about it other than peat; I'll have to grab a bottle to give it a proper try. Balvenie 15yo added to my wants list too.

Styler - I love citrusy flavours so Speysides tend to be my favourites with the cask strength ones adding some sweetness and complexity. I've not even tried Dalmore's standard output so that's one to put right soon.

MarkSDMF - I can unreservedly recommend the Yamazaki, can be picked up for ?25 or so from Tesco; get some in, you know it makes sense!

Puff Scotty - My scoring system is completely arbitrary and has no basis at all, just how much I enjoyed the bottle and value for money.

EugeneSax - Indeed the Rocks was an early bottling, bought from an Oddbins if I remember correctly; I've not tried the stuff in the new packaging and will probably avoid it now so thanks for pointing that out.

I'm down to two bottles at the moment so time to start looking around; I've heard rave write ups on Nikka From the Barrel so that's next followed by recommendations above.

Oh i can see myself visiting Asda's on my next payday.
I see a few bottles on the net, none less that ?30, probably because it is precisely that, online :P

                          Hi Eugene,
Pitfalls of 'designer' whisky, unfortunately just another way of shifting less desirable vintages, give the poor old unsuspecting public something really excellent then get as near as they can!
