  • Tobacco displays to be banned.

Tobacco displays in shops will be banned in England as part of a package of measures to discourage smoking.

So this is now law. How does this affect tobacconists? Do they get an exemption?

I'm intrigued about stores like the new Termeus in Liverpool, where the inside of the humidor is visible from the street and the whole shop window is a tobacco display.

And if the plain packaging laws come in does that mean that the cigar bands will have to be plain too?

We pay so much in tax "they" can't ban smoking, but "they" will mess us around to look good.

This was always on the cards wasn't it. God knows what tobacconists will or have to do.

I think it's slightly ludicrous tbh. You're making the products even more exclusive so even more desirable.

There may be a clause like the indoor smoking ban had for tobacconists (I'm sure Mitch will know); this will be interesting to find out.

If the lawmakers did some historical research they would find out how much of a resounding success the alcohol prohibition was in America. Where the control went from the government to the Mafia!!!

Crazy indeed, plays right into the hands of the criminal element, perhaps the dealing in Cannabis etc will go up through this. Good point they made regarding how easy it is to create fake packets when they are plain *doh*

Tobacconists will maybe go the route that bookies and sex shops have with blanked out windows, make you feel all seedy going in.....

I wish the government would actually spend some time thinking about the UK's problems, so many of these proposals seem like ill thought out band aids designed to gain popularity in the short term.

What seems cooler to a teenage boy A) A brightly coloured box on display for anyone to buy or B) a plain box with warnings on it that is kept out of sight and has to be asked for specifically?

              I'd go with B

I don't think it will be long before there's a big boom in cigarette cases again so it won't really matter what packaging people buy their cigarettes in.

More nanny state nonsense; and I thought Cameron's bunch would perhaps try a common sense approach to running the country..................

I like the idea of buying cigars form dark secluded shops... it makes it seedier!

                          Oh God, yes.
If they do it with tobacco, they will be able to do it with anything else.
Alcohol has been in the sights for years.

                          It is all utter bollocks.
                          And we smoke on.
