  • My Cuba Trip March 2011: Part 6

2011 March Cuba 140.jpg2011 March Cuba 130.jpgDay 6: Last night we were both up ill again. We had starved 24hrs before the Nacional but even that hadn't stopped it. This morning we had to transfer to Valadero, for the second part of our two center holiday. Instead of the bus that brought us from Valerdo airport which had facillities onboard, Thompson sent a taxi to collect us & another couple from the hotel. I was even more nervous than coming from Vinales & explained to the driver I might need to stop. Urgently! He said 'No Problemo' but I was worried we might not make it out of the city in time, I didn't fancy nipping behind a postbox!fficeffice" />>>

We made it without an arrest for public indeceny & arrived at the Iberostar Laguna Azul. We arrived at 1200 but Check-In wasn't until 1600. We asked if a room was available sooner we would greatly appreciate it as we really needed to lie down. Looking at us again a room was found in 5mins. Guess we didn't look like a good advertisment in the lobby.

Confined to barracks rest of day.

Day 7: Wife feeling better, my problem continued so mindfulof Marylin's advice that if it didn't go away I should see a doctor as there are parasites in the local water, she boils all her's but of course maybe the farmer who made us the Mojito hadn't boiled his water or the water for the ice. I had actually asked for no ice but it didn't seem to come across, not wanting to make a fuss or offend & against my better judgement I drank it. Really would advise any one else to say they have sensitive teeth & can't have ice, point to tooth & play a little charade, sure it would get through more politiely that implying you don't trust thier hygiene standards.

So we both saw the hotel doctor in the morning. As my abdominal sounds were audible without a stethoscope, I didn't have any trouble persuading her to give me antibiotics & re-hydration salts but because the wife was feeling better she didn't get any. I did try to insist, feeling sure it would likely return & the doctor wouldn't be on call the next day (Sunday).

That evening feeling no worse we ventured into the buffet resturant, we saw all the food, we observed the general populice consuming as if they hadn't eaten for 24hrs & might not again. We had to turn the wine waiter down, several times & we sat & looked at our fare. 2011 March Cuba 145.jpg Yes that's all we had.

Day 8: I hadn't been unwell now for 24hrs, just felt lousy but the wife... yes as I predicted, was up all night. Of course no doctor today so I made the logical decision to share my medication so she would waste a day less waiting for the AB's.
Stayed in our room until 1600 when the wife, determined to catch some UV, visited the pool side, logging the site facillites as we went.
I managed light dinner & we went to the evening show.2011 March Cuba 157.jpg

Day 9: Morning spent at docotor's, explaining why wife needed AB's so we could both finish our respective courses.
Rest of day watching wife bake in 30o sun. Did consider having a cigar after Lunch, I mean we are in Cuba but still recovering; did have glass of wine & a beer at the evening show. Boy this is fun. I would have minded so much is weren't at an all inclusive. We barely eat enough at there places to make it worthwhile anyaway but the 5yo's were packing away more than us at this stage.
I booked the 3 Specialitiy Resturants that we were allowed on a 9 day stay. I chose the Steak House (later changed by wife to Cuban), as I had a certain Monte lined up I was determined to smoke; Romantica & Itailian. I booked Thurs, Fri & Sat, leaving us as much time as possible to get back in shape.

I had met a Canadian Fire Chief called Frank & had aranged to meet to smoke in the cigar room. Unfortunatley we must have missed each other but as wife went to bed early again, I nipped in to try the farmer's custom rolled from the horse ride excusion. I wanted to know if they were any good & whether I should keep them or give them way. I was still hoping to buy a few more stix & I hadn't even smoked most of the ones I had brought.
The cigar was fine & I decided to keep them if I could. I met some Canadian lads but no real players in the bar that night.2011 March Cuba 156.jpg

Day 10: Wife feeling better today & I had no ill effects from cigar & beer, on the mend at last. Morning by pool with wife, she cooking on gas & me in the shade. Finally enjoyed lunch & met up with Frank & his wife Lynn. We withdrew to the verranda afterwards for coffee & I pulled out a pair of Vegueros Seoane's that I had brought at La Corona ( I picked up several singles of vitolas I hadn't had before. I don't believe these are available in Europe). Went down rather nicely.
Evening show was a Lion King tribute. Guess it didn't make Elton John any richer

Simon, these are so great and that photo of you under the Casa Simon Bolivar plaque is priceless. It even looks like it could be you. Terrible that you two got so sick during the trip. Do you have a picasa account you can upload all your pictures and post a link here? All you need is a gmail account and it's a great way to backup all your pictures. You can see mine in the signature below and probably sign up from there. I love it. Looking forward to your adventures in part 7.
