Just finished watching this (hadn't seen it before)

What a fantastic film..... entertaining, funny, multi-layed, thought-provoking, well written and directed, excellent performances (especially Jake Gyllenhaal who is a revelation)

Really a classic in my opinion.

It's not often I see a film that I really rate these days!
"By the cigars they smoke, and the composers they love, ye shall know the texture of men's souls." John Galsworthy
"A good Cuban cigar closes the door to the vulgarities of the world." Franz Liszt
"The most futile and disastrous day seems well spent when it is reviewed through the blue, fragrant smoke of a Havana Cigar." Evelyn Waugh
"Remember, commander, no cigars before launch." a Cuban doctor's orders to an astronaut at Cape Canaveral

It is one of those films that requires more than one viewing with some serious reading done in between. The first time I saw it I was firmly in the 'what the hell is this one about?', I had to force myself to watch it all. I then went away and started reading up on a few of the (initially) outlandish concepts and theories that people have come up with regards the goings on in it. The second time I watched it, it was with some of those theories in mind and it was a much better film than I remembered.
Lo there do I see my Father. Lo there do I see my Mother, and my Sisters and my Brothers. Lo there do I see the line of my people, back to the beginning. Lo they do call to me. They bid me take my place among them, in the halls of Valhalla where the brave may live forever.

Totally agree with all above comments. Bored people to death telling them how great this film was when it first came out. A classic indeed.

I do love the eclectic mix of people on these forums!

Yes, it's a fantastic film although I know very few people who would agree with me so it's great to see the positive comments here. It stands up to repeated viewing very well and the introduction to the highschool with "Head Over Heels" playing over it is one of my favourite uses of a song in a film (but that's a whole other topic!).
