  • Ybor City

Many areas around the world are famous for their cigar production, most notably must be Cuba and other surrounding areas such as the Dominican Republic and Honduras however one place that seems to slip past many people?s attention is Ybor City, Tampa. So here is some information on it:

Ybor City is a historic district in Tampa, Florida, it?s named after Vincent Martinez Ybor. He was a Spaniard who immigrated to Cuba at the age of 14. Once there he started as a cigar salesman, he eventually began to manufacturer cigars he had previously sold. And then started his own cigar factory in Havana. This period in time was a volatile one in Cuba with a lot of unrest with the start ten years? war, although a Spaniard he sympathised with the Cuban rebels fighting for independence, this sympathy led to him supporting their cause, Vincent Ybor moved his factory and his workers to Key West, Florida avoiding the unrest and trouble after falling into trouble with the authorities himself.

The success of this relocation fluctuated, while it was profitable, labour and transportation problems kept true success out of reach. A friend of Ybor's, convinced him to look into Tampa as a place to set up the business more successfully. Tampa could offer the climate, water, and the transportation necessary for a more efficient and productive operation than Key West.

Ybor was sold on the Tampa idea and purchased a large area of land in 1886, not only starting a business, but starting a town. The area, built for the purpose of housing Ybor?s factories and his factory workers, became fittingly known as Ybor City.

Following the lead of Ybor and his success, many other cigar manufacturers moved to this area. By the end of the 19th century, Ybor City and Tampa had the honour of being the largest cigar manufacturer in the world. The area itself also saw a population boom as well. When Ybor City was incorporated by Tampa into its municipality, the population shot up to 3000; three years later that number nearly doubled.....
