I'll be interested to read about the world of pipes, when I mature into an older gent I can certainly see myself taking up the hobby.

If tobacco isn't illegal by then!

You should start sooner rather than later. There is research to suggest that pipe smokers live longer than non smokers.

Yeah, start now! A pack of St. Bruno Flake, a Missouri Meerschaum corncob pipe and a Czech tool will set you back less than ?20 and will likely open up a whole new world. I'm only 31 and when I don't want to concentrate on a cigar, a pipe is just the trick. Rarely smoke it in public though...

the days of "pipes are for old guys (preferably with slippers)" are gone... just go on youtube and check out the community (pipefriendCHS is a pretty cool customer in my opinion!)

By the way, do I get some kudos for prompting Deano into creating this sub-forum!! Yayy to me

Hmmm, you guys might be selling this to me. Not sure what my wife's going to say though, she thinks she's married someone old before his time as it is!

Can I suggest a sticky glossary? There seems to be a lot of pipe specific terminology from types of pipe to cuts and strains of tobacco and it would be helpful to have a single point of reference for these things.

As for the strains of tobacco, you might take the time to read THIS ARTICLE. (yes, this is from an another board, please mods delete if it breaks a rule)?

I'm sure I have a link to an extensive glossary somewhere, just don't have the time at the moment?

                  In the Beginning!

Muchachos, I actually started out with a pipe many moons ago when a brujo from State of Mind, Mexico offered me a bag of tobacco in exchange for a favor (a common practice among native North American Indians). The herb smelled so sweet that I couldn't resist sneaking a pipe from Pappy Coro's collection and giving it a try. I was hooked!

Years later, as I was firing up a bowl in So. California, a friend asked why I bothered with a pipe (and all the required associated paraphernalia) when I could smoke a cigar - neat and simple. Well, amigos, since the day, I haven't looked back.

So I will be following this forum with great interest.

Names Perro, el Perro, and I cut my canines on a corn-cob pipe and magical herb.
