After a recent 2 week trip to Croatia I'm not sure that letting them in is a good thing. Yes the country is nice but it is still very backward. Once you get out of the bigger towns then there is nothing. I camped at a small town called Stari Stelo. About 1km North of the Bosnian border about 10km North of Bihac. There was a brick building about 10' X 10' and that was the shop for the village. Nothing else. The next village was 8mile away which had a big hotel and some shops. But still nothing major.
When you head to the coast it then becomes more commercial and they are really geared up for the tourist trade. Prices aren't that much cheaper than the rest of Europe. A camping pitch was already 20eu.
They are already running a dual currency economy. Everywhere wants to take Euros but give a real bad exchange rate.
Although this is only a snapshot of the whole country I feel that in time Croatia will become a burden on other EU member states and could cost s millions in the future.
Does anyone else have any thoughts on this?

Being Ex Army and an RE as well it interests me) they seem to have gained a lot of sponsorship from some very big European companys to help with the demining programme. As they have signed the Ottowa Treaty they are obliged to remove all mines from Croatian soil. THey seem to be having some succes having cleared huge areas. But IIRC the UN a few years ago published a paper on costs. They reckoned that it cost on average 2 pounds sterling to lay an AP mine. But to remove/make safe that mine was over 200 pounds sterling. So as you can see the costs of demining areas is huge. Plus you have to have staff that are willing to lie down in a field and poke spikes in the ground looking for mines. (poking spikes is a very general term. It is quite technical and best not discussed here how it is done.)
