Facebook groups - are they worth it?

Then you enter the ridiculous world of "custom rolls".... Seriously, some of the stories I hear are the same peddled crap that we hear from holiday makers fresh back from Cuba.

Cigar buying and selling is a very small niche market and the social media world is very small , generally bad sellers have been found out and outed extremely quickly, and a lot of 'dealers' or regular sellers would never risk their reputation and 'my word is my bond' over selling shoddy merchandise.

Lol. Yes this of course ^^
I've only bought a few boxes from FB and been lucky so far.
But come on, surely no one believes these sellers! Do they?
Edit: I do also wonder about the professional auctions. What's the history?
But the second hand market is huge and seems that's where all the HTF and older stuff is at not millionaire prices!

I’m a member of a couple of the sales/auction groups on FB, and one thing that really strikes me is thatthe pedrigree of the smokes is never questioned or argued. EVERYONE always states that their cigars have been stored at prime conditions I.e. 67% RH and 19 degrees C for as long as they’ve had them. From my wine collecting years and experience I know that this is bullshitt.
Very few “ordinary or intermediate” owners/collectors have 100% storage control. Only the really serious ones have. So if someone offers some 2001 cigars with this statement, I’d bet that the chance of it being true is less than 50%.
First, they might not have had them from the beginning. Where were they before? Secondly if your device says 67%RH is that then the true number? Thirdly, ok let’s say you have a nice closet/cabinet type humidor, the RH can span 10% RH from top to bottom if stacked full etc. etc.
Of course you could just not buy from these groups, but just my 0.02 $

Thanks for the kind words @Emaresee.
I do run a group on Facebook. Membership is by invite / sponsorship in a bid to try and protect group members / ensure group integrity.
Doesn't always work as some people don't seem to understand the concept of not adding every one you've ever mentioned cigars to.
I'm sure once you've got your PMs you'll be set away with some of the great deals on here and likely gleen some information/direction from the very helpful group members on here too.Last edited by RobBooth; 16-01-2019, 10:48 AM.

+1 from me too. This forum is the place to go for advice and getting to know generous like minded people.

now, facebook clearly offers much the same. BUT it actively promotes self promotion.... So its an open meeting place for the self-obsessed and crack pot brigade.... Queue a long line of; flat-earthers, anti-vaxers, trump supporters, supporters of any extreme cause (think Gammon...! and the utter turd that is Tommy Robinson and his vile gang).... As well as those who cant eat anything without sharing a picture, cant go anywhere without posting a picture of themselves obscuring the thing they are showing off about seeing, or take a run/bike ride without making it known to the world....!!!
i realise there are a number of chunks of irony in there as we endlessly share pics of cigars we are buying/smoking.... But we are choosing to share in a specific forum with people that like that stuff, rather than broadcasting on FB to old school pals, former lovers, work colleagues and dear old aunty jeanie....
that said some of the FB groups are exceptional, and continue to show that the world is full of generous and decent folk. A stonkingly good example is the one mentioned above and run by RobBooth - it is a genuine joy to be a part of and he is a true BOTL and all round good egg.
BUT if you dont look after your privacy settings, if you dont look at who you are sharing what with, and you dont check who is posting what before you like and/or share, expect to be surrounded by numbskulls, bigots and videos/pics of cats quite quickly.
