I'm not so sure that's any guarantee of authenticity - possibly so in some countries/airports, but not all.

For example one of the ebay Fauxhiba vendors recently castigated on here continued his claim in correspondence with me that his sticks had come from an airport Duty Free- way beyond any chance of persuading me to buy them, and even after they'd been pulled from ebay. He seemed genuinely interested in finding out if his sticks were real & eventually agreed to sell them to a tobacconist he took them to.

I also believe I too might have been "stung" by an official airport duty free & am currently investigating further.

Just to be clear pretty much the ONLY places you will get genuine Cuban cigars is at Duty Free and at the La Casa Del Habanos franchise shops. If you buy from almost any other source they WILL be fake (however good they look or convincing the back-story)

Where is the mad Mexican when you need him?

As for Mexico, well cheap cubans aside (perhaps best from airport duty free to safeguard against fakes?), how about getting some of their own top brands - Santa Clara and Te-Amo for example - as I'm sure that's where the value for money will lay...
That sounds like a plan, rather than being stung for fakes on the beach. I land in Mexico in mid afternoon, so will have a chance to check out the shops there and will be venturing into Cancun and Play Del Carmen!

    Thanks!

Thanks for all your replies folks, genuinely appreciated!

I am heading to the Mayan Riviera, I've been led to believe Cigars can be purchased on the beaches, but I would assume these won't be legitamate?

Your correct about the fake Cubans. I been to Mexico a few times. The only place to get the real thing is at the LCDH.

LOTS of fakes out in mexico..so just make sure you know the common fakes and buy from reputable stands!
Brand wise..they do sell cubans out there so cohiba (often faked!) and RyJ are two of my cuban favs.. the cohiba often have non shiny, embossed logo's on the bands of thier fakes.
RyJ fakes (as ive found them myself..nearly fooled!) have a much more light coloured band. the band is sometimes double folded or over folded, the 'arrows' dont meet up correctly and the wrapper is just poor.

just buy one or two of the brands your thinking of buying..keep the bands with you and should help guide you into the world of avoiding fakes..but it is VERY easy to slip off a band and put it on another...so let your head guide you also.

    Hope i helped a tad

    Wedding Cigars

    Hey folks,

Bit of a cigar newbie, but certainly someone who is keen to become a connoisseur!

    Anyway!

Bought myself a few H. Upmann Coronas Juniors for my brothers and I for my older brothers wedding, any views on this particular brand?

Also, said wedding is in Mexico, and I intent buying a few out there, any ideas as to what I should avoid?

    Thanks!
