Interesting as always to hear your opinion Simon, what would your favourite Cohiba be out of interest? If I remember right you're a fan of a good skinny so the Lanceros maybe?

Ha, I guess I am getting a little predictable Alex, Yes I'd say a well aged Lanceros is certainly hard to beat; stands on it's own, without the fancy label. Needs 5yrs+ to come through & 10+ shows more rewards to the patient man. I guess next I'd go for the CE, basically a mini Lanceros, for when you haven't got time for the longer smoke.
If we step out of the regular production the GR Cohibas are amazing in fact I bought a Seleccion box 2003 just before Christmas. My driver is all set to deliver it & I should have it by the end of May. Waiting to age sticks in your Humi is one thing, but waiting 6 months for delivery is testing even my patience!

Before Christmas I'd never bought a whole box of Cohibas, just didn't smoke enough of them to justify it but these are my recent purchases (seleccion library photo).

I have a box from 09 and they are great.

I bought a new box based on smoking an old one and they've had to go to sleep.

On Sunday i had my first Cohiba, a Cohiba Maduro 5 Secretos. It had the most wonderful blue smoke, but the construction was awful and plagued with an unravelling wrapper, which created burn issues. The flavour was also rather monochrome - certainly to my noob tongue anyway! Be a while before i reach for another one...

I think there is also an element of Cohiba being something you don't appreciate straight away; it took me a fair few before I developed a taste for them

The price still means its a special occasion cigar (and also builds the brand up, almost inevitably resulting in disappointment)

Sig II is my least fav Cohiba & even when it has good construction, I have never felt it justified the price band. Try the Trini Coloniales or even Reyes as better & cheaper alternatives.

I thought quality with this kind of product & all the hype that surrounds it would have been fairly high, is that going to happen every time I spend ?10-20 on a Cuban!!

The only thing you can really do is inspect them before buying where possible, although this is no guarantee you'll weed out all duds. If you do happen to light up a plugged stick you could potentially try cutting it down past the plug to salvage what you can (depending on where it is) or using some sort of skewer to poke an airway. Sometimes though it's best just to cut your losses, bin it and try again. To be fair completely unsmokable cigars are very much an exception from my experience so I wouldn't get too disheartened.

All part and parcel of hand made cigars.....I've had some shockers you can open them up with some poker I've used a thin needed when I've been at home.

I started collect cigars only 18months ago and I've put my cohiba list to once side....I always use to smoke cohibas on holiday and party's it was the thing to do.....But this was before i took it up has a hobby. When I started collect cigars at the beging i bought 5 cohiba robustos and 5 partagas D4...I had to say hands down the D4 Was may favourite from the begining..Everyone says cohiba needs at least 4 years on it before they come.good...So.all the cohibas i have I've left them to sleep and see what the fuss is about.

Siglo 2 is about that size (mareva). Unfortunately that sometimes happens, it's the cost of buying a hand made item I'm afraid. You should expect better given the premium associated with Cohiba but Cuba's quality control is notoriously... how can I word this diplomatically... notoriously imperfect.
