If you enjoyed the 10 year old, try the Laphraoigh Quarter Cask. Its got a bit more wood in with the peat which makes an absolutely delicious flavour profile. Periodically its on offer for ?25-30 (usually ?35-40) and for my money its probably the best Islay at either price point. Have a bottle of Laphraoig Triple Wood in the cupboard I've been saving for a special occasion, quite excited about cracking that one open.

If I recall correctly, I think your spot on, which would explain the lovely sweet finish.

I have a bottle of Caol Ila Distillers, been a while since I tried it but from memory isn't that the one finished in a Moscatel cask? Tis a fine dram.Originally posted by Simon-JG-hr View PostI think I'm generally with you guys, I love Islay whiskies, but as a rule think they overpower cigars. I like something lighter and sweeter to complement the slight bitter notes of cigars. Generalisation, admittedly.
That said, I have on a few occasions enjoyed a Caol Ila Distiller's Edition (can't remember which year) with a cigar. Love the oily mouth feel, and even though there is a strong peaty/smokiness, there's a sweetness too, which helps balance it nicely with a cigar.
My favourite with cigars is a Dalmore Gran Reserva or Dalmore Valour.

Totally agree with you Sarge, sounds like a good idea but has never worked to me. The drink should compliment the cigar & allow it's nuances to show, not smother the cigar completely as the peaty whiskies do for me.

My problem is that I often hide them away to stop me drinking them too fast but then I forget about them

Nah spirits can never look pathetic. I suppose mine are more of a rotation than a collection, because they all get drunk.
