Sadly yes. One can ask for real Lao coffee and if you are worthy you can get real coffee which is very strong as well but not very tasty. The only place where you can get decent Lao coffee is the Bolaven Plateau which is where the coffee plantations are located. Did a tour with a small semi automatic motor bike there and it was very nice, lots of waterfalls there. After touring the south of Laos for over a week I was kinda fed up with the waterfalls though. I liked northern Laos much more, the landscapes were breathtaking.

I do remember the green tea being very good though

Re 'soft' drinks and a cigar, full fat coke and Dr Pepper are two I like. Not mixed of course.

Pressed coffee on the hot beverage front for me. Probably Guatemalan.
I love backpacking through SE Asia, my last trip was in November. Visited Laos for a month this time, the coffee there sucks but apart from that my trip there was amazing.

This pic might refresh your memory:

The coffee is served in a metal thingy on top of a glass and it drips through it. The taste is very unique, rather strong but with a little sweetness to it. I never had coffee like that before visiting Vietnam the first time. I brought back a few kilos of coffee from my last trip to Vietnam but don't have much left. I will probably revisit Vietnam again soon to stock up again.
And most EU citizens can now visit the country without a visa for two weeks, which is a little short but I liked Laos so much that I wouldn't mind visiting again. Maybe next year as I'd like to visit Cuba this year.

Tea for me most of the time. I find oolong the best match with cigars as it often is loaded with sweet notes.

I also had some good experiences with Japanese green teas but they usually don't last the whole cigar as you can only infuse them about 3 times, opposed to oolong which yields 6-10 infusions.

Recommendable are also herbal infusions mixed with Amacha (sweet herbal tea). Amacha can be sweeter than any Softdrinks, but without the sugar and more flavour.

I'm on a self-imposed booze-free run at the moment. Instead of sipping delicious English craft IPA's or big juicy cab sav's of an evening, i'm enjoying a glass of Belvoir Ginger Cordial or the Sanny P sparkling fruit cans mentioned above. Favourite at the moment is the Lime & Mint.

I've tried the chinnoto which has definitely got an 'adult' taste to it. I'm a big fan of the Negroni cocktail, in fact it's probably my aperitif/digestif of choice, (great to smoke with, particularly on a warm evening ) so the bitterness of chinnoto works for me. I've yet to try it with a smoke.
