I'm lucky and have an excellent local, I had two smaller but still ok locals where I used to live. My current local does online trade and I would vouch for the quality of their service. For clarity I have no affiliation other than as a very happy customer. http://www.mysmokingshop.co.uk/
Obviously there are other excellent retailers about and I would always recommend supporting and building a relationship with your local (where possible) even if they are marginally more expensive than online. As they say, if you don't use em you lose em!

Gawith Hoggarth Kendal American Black & Brown, really nice stuff. It's one of the first I tried and it's stayed with me.
Davidoff Red Mixture, lovely mild smoke.Dunhill Erly Morning, light and sweet. Dunhill 965 and Nightcap, deeper richer smokes two of the best around IMO, but perhaps save these for a little later.
Erinmore Flake, can slightly polarise opinion but I find it more hit than miss.
St Bruno, what can I say? It's a classic! One of the best aromas ever.
Hope that gives you some ideas.

I always make a point of popping into Harrison & Simmonds when in your neck of the woods; usually a few bargains to be had, and great to see a traditional Tobacconist still holding it's own on the High Street
