  • WARNING: Problems at Holguin Airport, Cuba

Just flew back last Tuesday from Holguin.

Very disappointed that once we EVENTUALLY got into the departure lounge (Took over 1.5 hours for the whole flight to get in due to only ONE scanner), the Cigar shop was closed. Aarrghhhhhh........

Luckily I bought a couple of boxes from the state shop in Guardalavaca, or I'd have come back with nothing.

Moral of the story: Don't rely on getting your cigars at Holguin airport, even if the shop's open, you might not have time to go in as it takes so long to get into the lounge.

Also, in case you haven't been before, you also have to go through a scanner when you arrive (and again, only one machine, behind the passport control barrier), so that takes a long time too. Recommend you take water through as it is very hot and humid. Unfortunately, both in and outbound, you can't see the line as it's behind the passport control barriers, so just be aware.....

Yep was closed for me too and I don't think anything was humidified either. Avoid.

In Cuba Sean you pay the same price everywhere (except for glass topped boxes of Cohibas) because it's state controlled.

I was always advised not to buy from the airport-something to do with quality not being so good, both the sticks themselves and the storage conditions? Better selection-LE's in the LCDH's anyway. The shop at the Partagas factory was great.

Yeah for sure the factory is better! Indeed even Havana airport's collection is somewhat tardy. Stay clear of cigars in Cuban airports full stop, it seems.

I bought from Holguin airport last year. The sticks were good, but on the dry side so I'd go along with the lack of humidity, which is odd for Cuba as in theory you can just do nothing and they'll be fine, so somehow they are removing humidification from them there....

I can't speak for Cuba. In the Dominican Republic if you wait to get domestically produced items at the "duty free" store in the airport you will over pay dramatically. It was cheaper to get the local brands of rum at the supermarket than it was in the airport.

Why do you need to take garlic?
