  • H.Upmann Half Corona

The new H.Upmann Half Corona is just starting to appear in the stores although it looks as though the nice little tins have been held over in favour of boxes of 25.

When I was in Havana recently a 'friend who knows' told me that the first batch of these are quite exceptionally good. I'm off to town to get my hands on a couple this afternoon.

Got a box in Havana 2 weeks ago, just missed you Nic. Nice Upmann flavours from these, good price at 69 cuc for 25. The problem is they're about 1/2 inch too short for me, so I guess I don't get the point of them. I left most of the box with a friend there.

I have now smoked a couple of these and I've enjoyed them. Can't disagree with Ryan that another half inch would help (but then that's always the case fnarr fnarr)

I have to say that although I am not a regular Upmann smoker I have found them to be stronger than other of the same brand. I think they are a great little smoke and ideal for when you only 20 minutes but on balance, ideally I would prefer something with a little more substance.

Having said that @ 69 cuc that's a good deal!

Short cigars can often taste stronger as one is closer to the heat. Should be smoking one on Tuesday and will let you know what I think. I saw them on Sat and they are very small.

I smoked one of these the other day and my first thought was "did they just cut it in half" other than that it was pretty good for the first half nice flavours decent burn volumes of smoke but i found the second half to be quite harsh so i think 6 months down and ill try again because for such a small thing they showed alot of promise.

The ones we smoked were crap. No flavour, profile...nothing

The ones we smoked were great. Lots of flavour, good Upmann profile...everything a good Cuban cigar should be and less -as in these would be even better if they were full length Coronas.

Bob, will you please stop talking these cigars up. I'm looking forward to lots of lovely aged little sticks in 2-3 years because no one like them. So Schtum!

I'm pleased Bob enjoyed his .... in Cuba.

But my experience with them is the same as Monks. I think they must be like Portugese wine, essentially shite and don't travel!

I want to know how they roll them. Seems to me they either use off-cuts, have some nifty way of cutting them in half and capping both ends ...or discard 3/4 of the tobacco (which hardly seems credible on a cigar of this price).

From what I tasted off-cuts is the front-runner.

I'm eager to try these and to get some of the tins. Upmanns seem to do particularly well with age. Since we've lost the Dip 5s I'd like to see another small cigar option.

Save yourself the experience and just get dip5s or partagas shorts instead.

I had one just before Christmas. I quite enjoyed it, sat in Sautter's as winter carried on outside. However, it was my first cigar for nearly three months, so I may have been a little over-enthusiastic about it (must have had the happy things flowing in response to my first Cuban tobacco for so long). I like the concept, so will be trying more, and hoping that my initial thoughts on the cigar were correct, not just a rose-tinted view.

I really enjoyed the first one I had. Had another on Friday just gone and it was awful... I suspect they are just in a sick period. I'll be seeking out a box when I'm in Geneva in a few weeks.
