  • Cuban Cigar verification site.

I tried to use this site to verify a box of Cohibas, but everytime I got a message saying: Site busy. Is there another site I could try? http://www.habanos.com/Sellos/Info/VerificaSelloCajon

Clear now, I've just tried it!

The funny part with this tool is it was put online at the time the market was flooded with tens of thousands of boxes from the grey market…

Who would check the code of a box purchased from a respectable shop in London, Edimburg or Paris? It's an other story when you get cigars from an online shop whose owner is in country A, secretary in country B, helpline in country C, stock in country D…

I really don't see the point in this, if I'm a faker I walk in any LCDH ask is it OK to take photos photograph loads including all the bar codes of the sticks I want to counterfeit. Then go and print out 3000 labels for each then when someone checks on the website they think they have legit sticks.

As always trust your eyes, taste buds and most importantly your vendor

                Unfortunately and exactly right.

1/ You'll never be allowed to take pictures of codes in a habanos retailer shop, LCDH or not…
2/ The verification tool returns not only "legit/non legit", but it names the vitola AND the packaging. The codes are different on cardboard packs, boxes of 10, boxes of 25
3/ Fakers don't give a shit about codes. Their main target is people who don't know about box codes, or at best know that "some code should be inked".
Even the best fakes rolled in Cuba have wrong box codes. In the Caribbeans they don't even bother to imitate a legit packaging, tourists always buy their glass top Fauxhiba…

                    1) digital zoom will let you read a code from a general picture or just buy 1 box to counterfeit.
                    2) I know this print 3000 labels for every violita u plan to counterfeit with their own code.
                    3) while a large percentage of counterfeits are as you describe there is a smaller percentage aimed directly at the "people in the know" there is even a website selling real bands, labels packaging etc.

I think you're underestimating the counterfeiters Frank.

If I were doing it I'd start by deciding which brands and vitola I wanted to fake and then go about re-creating the boxes, bands and labeling for each. If I wanted RyJ Churchill (I could buy a box of Mitch for a Fiver) I'd go into a cigar shop with my phone innocently to hand and walk out with any barcode I wanted. Any date code I'd memorise, it's only eight digits usually so easy pickings.

Voila! 3000 fake boxes of RyJ Churchill ready to rock 'n' roll. And nobody other than those totally familiar with them would be able to determine the fakery.
If you want to, you can.
And, if you can, you must!

Doesn't really matter. It's locking the door after the horse has bolted. Your holding the box and your money's in a vendors pocket, if he's ligit you might just get it back, if he ain't you wont.
