    Romeo Y Julieta Wide Churchill

    Size:

    5 1/8" long x 55 ring gauge.

    Appearance: 9/10

Double banded, medium brown - vein free wrapper. All in all, a solid looking cigar

    Construction: 9.0/10

Many would give it a 10 as it was almost faultless (the ash on this cigar lasted close up to the second band), my only issue was that it did not give a great deal of resistance. Maybe that is a symptom of the ring gauge as you really do get voluminous amounts of smoke, clouds of it.

    Flavour: 8.0/10

    Pre draw - Cedar

1/3 - On lighting the cigar I got sweet cedar and a nutty flavour

2/3 - Similar to the first third

3/3 - Slightly more earthy but still featuring the earlier flavours.

To its credit this cigar was VERY consistent throughout, I did not encounter any harshness and had no problems in enjoying and smoking it. However in its strength lies its weakness, there was no real complexity. Yes it is a BIG smoke but in terms of flavour it does not have that wow factor.

    Value: 7/10

At around ?17.00 for a cigar of its size, its not bad. However its probably not going to be a regular smoke (well not for me at that price anyway!) I would probably rather spend a few quid more and smoke a better robusto (or any robusto for that matter). Its a shame because this is a good stick but at the price I would not go toward it regularly.

    Overall: 8/10

Excellent construction, decent flavour - its a consistent cigar but feels as though your left lacking somewhat (maybe that comes from the hype surrounding the name). IMHO I do not think its a cigar that will improve with age, although coming from me this counts for nothing lol. There is a chance I would revisit but not in a great hurry to do so .

It feels ive repeated my self so much with this review, a bit like the smoking experience of this cigar .

Tried these quite a while back...not IMO one of RyJ's best. I'm sticking with the earlier SC's...

great review sir........ however i'd like to point out the above typo!!! tubed psd4's are ?17-18 here in belfast, which is expensive!!! however, most decent robustos are around the ?13-15 mark here e.g RASS, JL2 and VR famosos ?13, RyJ short churchill ?14.50, psd4 and boli RC ?15!!! you'd pay ?20+ for a CoRo or trini robusto, which i think are scandalously overpriced and not as good as the above mentioned robustos! you should not be paying over ?17 for a robusto!!! come to think of, here in belfast, the wide churchill is ?15, 50p more that a short churchill, and they've hardly sold!!!!
anyway, keep up the good work!!!

Nice review, thanks for sharing. I thought the WC was a decent cigar (with an unfortunate acronym) when I smoked it, just not great. I'd also implore Habanos, especially with the addition of the 'Petit Churchill' to give it a bloody rest with the RyJ Churchill line-up... The man will be rolling in his grave - afterall, it would have been quite reasonable to refer to him as wide, but petit...

I'm a fan of big ring gauges, but i'm kind of missing the 46 ring gauge, its a nice size to smoke. I like coronas and such but truth is when i pay out a cigar i always conclude id like to buy myself some more time, hence my robusto smokes and such, but 46 gauge in a 5inch formats a nice compromise.

Yes ditch the churchill name the poor man i am sure hes quite content to know he has become the 7 by 48 vitola for eternity.

Although I'm quite new to smoking cigars so no expert by any means this is the most disappointing smoke so far, I found the cigar quite bland overall, this was also my first Romeo y Julieta so it was doubly disappointing! Although I have brought a Short Churchill now, from reviews I have read this is a better smoke so fingers crossed!!

Short Churchill is one of the most memorable Havanas I've smoked....bought and smoked in Hotel Nacional de Cuba...Have also had some nightmares purchased in the UK, so hope it's a goodun!

But agree with Mannings review.... actually forgot I was smoking the one I had.....very "meh"

Yeah heard similar, sounds like one to avoid for now. Common with new releases it seems.

Good work Mr Manning. I've only tried one Wide Churchill and didn't like it. I've only tried one Short Churchill and thought that a waste of time too and to my regret I've still 5 in the humi. These are bland, characterless cigars and I don't think all the aging of eternity will do anything for them.

As Alex says there are better, SLR Regios and VR Famosos have far more going for them. Unfortunately the PSD4 and myself don't get on .... so I can't give those a plug!
If you want to, you can.
And, if you can, you must!

Just getting to the end of the Short Churchill, and it is a far more enjoyable smoke than the Wide, will certainly be buying more of these!

I think I have had four of these and have enjoyed them all. I have two tubed and one untubed in my humi and am looking forward to them all.

                              Takes all sorts I suppose.
