    Gentlemen

I’ve been browsing the forum for a day or so and thought I’d sign up as you certainly know your stuff!
I’ve recently developed a liking for cigars this comes as a bit of a surprise as I quit smoking roll ups all together in March this year. After I was given a pack of 3 Romeo + Julieta as a gift, I thoroughly enjoyed them and when I took a trip to Florence, Italy earlier this month, I experimented with some more cigars.
In short, I tried a box of three Backgammon (at 1 euro 30 each!) and a single machine rolled from the dominican. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised with the Backgammon, it’s a German manufactured 100% Cuban Tabaco smoke, which was a little dry at first but improved over time and had enough character to consider buying a box. I personally didn’t rate the Dominican brand at all, I forget the name but that’s about how good it was.

I’ve struggled to find a supplier of the Backgammon and personally can’t afford to keep a stock of Romeo + Julieta. At a little over a euro each, those backgammon’s are worth considering but I came here to ask if I should be looking at something a little more proven, for a reasonable price.
When I walked into my local tobacconist I ended up buying a single Don Ramos to try out, a box of 10 of these come out at ?66 so that’s not bad!

Lastly I thought you’d be interested in a little purchase of mine. Something I bought a few months back and hardly used until now. This little multi tool pen was my companion abroad, cutting cigars is a little more fun and will you sit there smoking you can carve matches, fix your watch or just have a fiddle with something.

    Adios!

Welcome onboard Mike, interesting tool indeed, guess when travelling you pack that in your hold lugage though, security would just love to trash that!

Welcome to the forum mate, looks a cool little tool, i like little gadgety things like that myself.

I am a cigar newb myself with a similar history with smoking as you. With regards exploring "more proven" options, I think with most things it is all a very subjective pursuit and even more so when you think they are hand made and can vary from good to bad old and young, storage conditions etc

I have tried 1 non cuban and quite enjoyed it until the last third whereby it got very bitter (3x3 churchill from cgars web store) I think ultimately, the only way to know where you stand with regards which cigars you enjoy at whatever price point you want to pay, it is more a matter of sampling a few singles and see how you get on with them.

Do keep tasting notes though as they will help build up your knowledge with regards what YOU enjoy smoking.

I was lucky getting that tool as Firebox.com sent me a voucher for ?5 off anything, so the tool was only a tenner. It's definitely been worth it out and about

You're right, before i jetted off to Italy, I remembered last minute to chuck it in the suitcase!

Having only just experienced a box of Romeo + Julieta, I would say that i could sense the roots may have been Cuban as stated on the box but as i said the refinement wasn't there. It was a decent smoke though. My local tobacconist claims he'll have some stock in November, I'll keep you posted.

I think you're right, it's very personal, even down to the way people light up. I'm going to have a look over the forum and when I have some more experience I'll post some reviews!
Also i only like smoking the larger cigars for some reason, i have no interest in smoking something the size of a cigarette, I don't know if I'm missing out but all i can think about is enjoying a thick cigar with lots of flavour.
