Good start, I'm thinking some black lacquer on the base and shaft

I was contemplating Danish oil or boiled linseed on the base and wasn't sure about the rest but I like the idea of high gloss black on the metal parts.

Edit I'm also going the file the end into a crescent so they can push up flush with the glass bowl.

Some impressive work here Marc. Unfortunately, I never inherited by dad's handicraft or D.I.Y skills so I'm rubbish at this sort of stuff
