  • Recommendation required - mild panatela

My Wife's Uncle retires next month and I wanted to get him a box as a gift.

He smokes Hamlet but I want to see if I can get something that a bit nicer, but of a similar size/strength.

Would more than likely need to be celo wrapped as he doesn't have a humi, although I could always stick a Boveda pack in the box.

I could of course just buy him a box of Hamlet, but to be honest I'd rather buy him something else if that's the case.

    Thanks,

    Chris

Anyone going to Spain can pick up a box of La Aurora foil wrapped? They would be perfect.

Cheap humidor and a small selection of goodies? You might start something.

The cello only works on hamlet and the such cause they are dry cigars PG is used in them like cigarettes to stop them being crumbly and unsmokable so if you buy something better he is going to need to keep them humidified somehow. I would go with quintero, RG or PL Panatelas. A small boveda in Tupperware box will keep them good for a long time and they are of a similar size.

The La Aurora look perfect, but I need to have them to him by the 19th and I don't know of anyone going to Spain.

I'd love to get him a humi and get him into it properly but I know he wouldn't stick with it, he's got money but he's a tight arse (except with others) which is why I want to treat him to something he wouldn't normally buy for himself.

I didn't know that, thanks for the tip.

Right, for starters. Hamlet are not Panatelas they are Puritos. Closest near size in something halfway decent are Partagas Chico — box 25, cello wrapped and usually around €22 per card box — but they may be a little too full for him, a milder option are Quintero Purito which are around the same price, unfortunately neither are available (to my knowledge) in the UK .... Montecristo and RyJ versions which are, are crap.

Next sizes up are Entreacto, Carolina and Laguito 3. The best UK available Entreactos is El Rey del Mundo Demi Tasse, the only Carolinas is the Punch Margaritas and Laguito 3 are Cohiba Panatelas and a good bet if he prefers lighter smokes .... Davidoff Ambassadice.

I wouldn't worry to much about himidification for one small box, it's not as if he's likely to store them for years and years, keep them somewhere dry and away from direct light or radiators and they'll be fine.

                    Hope that helps.
If you want to, you can.
And, if you can, you must!

You can get La Aurora Chicos from www.thebackyshop.co.uk but at UK prices I'm afraid.

Arf mentioned ERDM Demi Tasse already, which would have been my suggestion as well

Why not go for something a bit bigger though as its such a special occasion, even if it isn't a box, a selection of PCs maybe, ideally it would be good to get one of the Seleccion boxes but I think they only come in Robustos and Piramides, which may be too big:
