40th Drink

I'm hitting 40 next year and was wondering about a tipple for my birthday.
Thought something from 1975 would be fitting, as it'll be as old as I am.
I know nothing about spirits really - other than I like cognac and tequila - used to like bourbon, but now just the smell can make me ill!
Also like wine, but can't imagine ever being able to afford something from 75....
Any suggestions most welcome!

Ryst-Dupeyron do some great Armagnacs, I have never had the 1975 vintage but it should be available (much cheaper than similar age Whisky I might add.)

Just one thing to consider, you tend to get more for your money with Armagnac over Cognac.
I.E. Higher quality spirit for your cash.

I'm your age, 40 next December. I'm going to get a spirit from 75. Apparently 75 wasn't a great year for port or wine but there are some decent bottles to be had. Steer clear if the sites that offer a bottle from your birth year, just because it was bottled in 1975 it doesn't make it good. I'd go with Cognac or Armagnac as its likely to be good for the money. Try to get something that spent decent time in wood before bottling as that's gonna be the time that it improves the most. Maybe we should both choose something the same and have a toast.

If it is bottled in 1993 does it still count as a 1975 whiskey?

Yeah, its distilled and put into casks in 75 making it distilled in the year of my birth. It's had 18 in wood and the rest in the bottle. If you look around you'll find old bottles of all sorts that sell for silly money because they are old even though they are aged in wood for 10, 20 or whatever in wood. The stuff in the bottles may not improve but having something made in your year of birth is the thing. However as lots of XO cognac is around 40 year aged you may get lucky and find a 75 distilling if you're clever at locating such things. If anyone can find me a 40 year old brandy that's just bottled I'd be very interested.

I see, makes sense, I was looking for something for my 30th last year but got confused with the whole bottled in x year distilled in y year. But now that i know, I will b looking out for something. Cheers dude

Would go with cognac, or armagnac..... Couldn't touch whisky(ey) or bourbon..... Would die.
