It was a American journalist can't remember the publication more than likely confusing the leaf sorting with rolling.

I've read that too, they held them on their laps whilst they sorted them and a little artistic licence ensured a legend was born.

In the despalillo, the stripping room in the factories and elsewhere, the the leaves are sorted by colour and size and the stems are stripped from the leaves, usually by women who stretch the leaves over their thighs. Before the revolution this was the only place in the factory where women worked. Rollers were almost exclusively men.
Here is a larger despalillio in San Juan y Martinez. Don't know if there are any virgins there.
