What would be the benefit? Forum rules would apply, you can only use it when you're on so it wouldn't add anything at all. It wouldn't be private, that's what PMs are for and like Deano said, it would be open to abuse.

if it was just put there and there's no hassle to Deano, all should be well. I can imagine that the majority of us would remain civil on there. afterall, if grown men can't moderate themselves on such a hobby, what's the point of a forum anyways?

Back on topic, there was Comet Chat which lived at the bottom of the page. It was more discreet in its presence and not open to anyone apart from the two participants. That might be the way forward.

As nice as that sounds, I found the tool to be a bit of a nuisance....postus interuptus, if you will. But for the record, it was limited to your so-called "friends" two at a time, as se?or CJ noted, and was a good way to see which of your friends was on line.

Here's the problem - if you can see them on-line, they can see you on-line and will likely want to start "chatting" just because. I found it difficult to post and chat at the same time, but if you ignored a "chat request" because you were busy reading and/or posting, you were viewed as a "chat snob."

Quite the conundrum, don't you know.

Now I have had a think about it I have changed my mind.

If its the same as the old system you mentioned and restricted to 2 or 3 people per chat then it kinda goes against what this place seems to be all about. You would lose out on the collective wisdom that stops somebody sprouting nonsense as though it was gospel truth or at least lets you shoot it down. Even people who aren't like that make the occasional mistake and it being an open forum that everyone can see (and at a later date then when it was said) means it can be corrected. It being assorted by threads means there is an archive of this knowable for future botl to make use of (and maybe current ones to use to refresh there memory).

I know this was suggest to be used for just having a chat but lets be honest, its going to be about cigars isn't it, and therefore could very well be helpful to others if kept and stored as we are now.
