I think most of our modern society is addicted to shopping nowadays and cigars are just a male orientated way to participate. Check how many DVDs/books you've got before you cry foul. Of course I'm not including those who live off the grid like you Marc.

For me over the past, I'd say it has been more of an obsession.
You think about them (prior to having them) and thoughts develop
in to an obsession until you've gone out and purchased them...

Neither for me , smoke one when i fancy one , daily ,weekly , monthly , wateva

I enjoy a cigar when on holiday , kick back and relax , lifes little luxury,s .

I dont consider because someone may buy boxes 25 , 50 , it becomes an obsession , rather just a sensible way of having aged stock , for the future .

I enjoy reading about cigars and forum members input , but its for knowledge , the banter etc , i visit other sites , forums about breeding native birds etc , keep birds myself , its a hobby

So , no addiction or obsession for me , just one of many interests .

I'm going to say obsession for me! It's also not just the Cigars themselves, it's the ever increasing collection of books, ashtrays, lighters cutters, punches etc. If I look at my Ebay 'recent search history' it's 90% cigar related! It's a fantastic hobby and one where it's not just about collecting 'stuff', you get to actually experience the pleasure of smoking the cigars too. With new releases and LE's and RE's always coming out, there is always something fresh and new to try which prevents the hobby going stale. Previously to joining in here, my main issue was finding people who shared the same passion as do! I know MLW was just about sick of hearing about it!

So what you're saying is not addiction to the drug in the lead but addiction/obsession to collecting. Yeah I had a spell if obsessive buying as many others have when new to the forum but I have that under control now. I'd love to have a cigar cellar for ageing specific stock and one unit upstairs for smoking stock but I think I'll have to be content with my scuba box and desktop singles humi for now.

Exactly tommy you hit the nail on the head thats what i've been trying to say from the begining not on about the smoking of cuban or non cuban cigars
but the buying side of it thats the addiction .

I think it's quickly become a serious obsession for me and I can see everything I think about it here in this thread. Joining the forum has made the hobby 'official' and legitimate, especially the discovery that there are others who are similarly obsessed (plus the positive change in my wife's attitude). Like Tommy after he first joined the forum, I'm up for a mad buying spree and I'm often preoccupied with thinking about what I should buy, where I'd put them when they arrive, etc. I also agree with MrMaduro - that this is about more than just collecting cigars and other stuff: we get to enjoy the cigars as well. I'm still astounded by the variety and this is another element of my obsession. I want to experience that variety, as well as go back to the ones I really enjoyed again and again, so I often think about what's an appropriate balance between the two - buying a variety of singles and buying boxes of the ones I really enjoyed. Despite no real experience or knowledge, I also find myself frequently thinking about the balance between buying for now and buying to put away!

I'd be the first to admit that I have a pretty poor sense of taste, but I'm now obsessed with that too, and I definitely wasn't before. If I'm to enjoy the variety I'm so obsessed with, I need to be able to articulate to myself why I enjoyed or hated a particular cigar. I've started drinking my coffee black and eating good quality chocolate in an attempt to wake up my taste buds and improve my appreciation of the basic flavours which people most commonly say they experience when smoking a cigar. At the weekend, I opened the back door after it had been raining and the first thing I smelled was an earthy outdoor smell, and I remember getting hints of that in some unlit cigars. So, it's become an obsession in lots of ways and taking more notice of the richness of tastes and smells I experience in daily life is a positive spin-off.

Perhaps the clearest evidence that this has become a significant and serious obsession is that my wife has also noted that I talk about cigars a lot. And I also miss the forum when I don't get chance to read it, let alone write anything on it. I can't remember the last time I bothered with Facebook or Twitter (well, I can ... probably the day before I joined this forum).

Is it an addiction? Well, I understand the difference between a physiological/physical and psychological addiction, and have experienced both. I'm definitely very seriously obsessed, but I'd hesitate to say I'm addicted! Ultimately, there is balance in my life - she's 4 and deserves more of my time than any hobby.

I'm trying to choose a few boxes to buy have been chewing them over for about a couple of months save them in my shopping basket and keep adding ,changing etc.... Looking to buy a good selection to lay down and smoke as well but when your looking at spending over a grand its part of the fun of cigars trying singles etc and chooses what to buy. I'll keep you all posted when I've finally ordered and they are delivered next month
