  • Taste?

    Hello,

I'm new to this forum. I've tried cigarettes in the past and found them tasting horrible. I thought I'd give cigars a try as I hear about people saying that they are going to have a nice glass of wine or a cigar to help unwind. I get very stressed out and wound up over everything throughout the day, no matter how small and at the end of the day I'd like to think of something to go back to to help me relax and enjoy. The only alcoholic drink I can stand is baileys so a nice glass of wine or scotch is out the question.

I went and bought some cafe creme and hamlet cigars yesterday and tried them but they just tasted like a cigarette to me, just a cloud of burning smoke in my mouth. I've seen lots of people talk about the "taste" of a cigar but I couldn't taste anything... The one thing I will say is after the one cigar I felt much happier and in a better mood but that could just be psychological..

Am I doing something wrong? Trying the wrong cigars? Is the taste something you acquire over the time? Or am I one of the unlucky ones that can't appreciate a cigar? Would be nice to just sit down with a glass of baileys and a nice tasting cigar..

You most certainly are my friend, go and buy a Cuban cigar (read a few threads for suggestions), have a good meal, then allow yourself a couple of hours to sit down and relax whilst you smoke the cigar. Most importantly, don't inhale! Take the smoke into your mouth, savour the flavour then exhale and relax. Smoke it till the flavour changes to something you no longer like or till your fingers burn! If the flavour gets a little harsh blow firmly back through the cigar to purge any impurities. Cafe Creme and Hamlet are like the Number 6 of cigars!

Tastes are all quite personal, as everyone's palettes are different. I do think though that it comes with experience and a little time trying out various cigars. You learn to delve in and really taste a cigar after smoking a few. Tastes I've encountered include: dark espresso (Cohiba secretos), coffee bean (montecristo no 4), toasted caramel (Hoyo no.1, El rey de mundo choix supreme), creamy grassy (Cohiba robusto), spice (Trinidad Reyes). But yes, I'd say it comes with time after trying a few different brands etc and really taking in the sensations.

Also, I believe a cigar is best smoked indoors, or outdoors but with zero wind. And ideally room temperature or outdoors in the summer. Wind and cold I've found are detrimental to a smoking experience.

There's the possibility it's not for you, but you could experiment a little more with to put it bluntly what I would call better cigars.

What is it you don't like about most alcohol? Perhaps you have very sensitive taste?

I would say follow what PJ said but have a nice hot bath between the meal and smoke. Have a light cigar like an El Rey Demi Tassi after the bath and while listening to sone nice calm music.... I know that would really relax me!

I hope everything is ok, stress can really damaging but it sounds like your doing the right thing in looking for a way to combat it.

          All the best!

Well that's that. Walked in there, couldn't see any cigars, felt awkward and embarrassed and walked out lol.
