  • What I've learnt - Cigar ageing.

When I stared smoking cigars I didn't pay much attention to the storage, age or type of cigars I smoked.

The first thing that became very apparent is that all cigars are created equal but some are most definitely more equal than others. I smoked cigars that have literally made me feel sick and others that have made me feel better! lol. Exploring the cigar world and finding what you like is very important.

The second thing that became apparent was the storage of said sticks. A cigar that has been in a glove box with no protection for a few months doesn't smoke very well. lol. As I started to buy humidors and related paraphernalia, the taste, draw and burn of the cigars improved.

The third and currently final lesson I have leant personally, is the ageing of a cigar is very important. Now I'm not talking about paying a ridiculous amount for some pre embargo cigars because of some misplaced belief of perfection. I'm talking about trying to buy sticks with at least a few years on them but much more importantly in my opinion, letting them rest and age in your humidor for as long as possible.
I have sticks in my humidor that when I brought them I thought were pretty poor but then a year or so later, are totally, totally different. A pure pleasure to smoke compared to a huge disappointment.

So..... I'm no expert but if there are newbies out there that are not taking care of the cigars, you may well be missing out.

What is the most important thing you have learnt about your cigars?

You've touched on some good things regarding what you've learned about your cigars. I can tell you that one of the most important things I've learned about my cigars is storage. Storage alone can affect how the cigar smokes and how it will impact your cigars down the road. If an individual is going to spend good money on cigars then an equal amount of effort should be put into maintaining them properly.

I find buying nearly as much fun as smoking.... Its like banking future moments of happiness!

i'm with these folk, i amass them faster than i smoke them and so aging is easy, but getting your storage right is worth doing in order to age 'em gracefully!

find a store, and a person you like buying from.... Build a relationship... It will pay off over time.

                enjoy!

The above statement could be taken to ways...
That I enjoy buying, a lot
                    OR
That I enjoy, buying a lot

                    Just to clarify....

                    IT'S BOTH! LOL

I bought the entire humidor of a small off license that was going out of business, around 15 years ago... And the Cigars had been there a while. They are the best cigars I have. It really makes a difference. I'm often too impatient to wait though.
