    Cold brewed coffee

Knocked up a half litre in the French press last night. I went with 50g and it was adequate in terms of the strength I like. The product was nice, 'smoother' than a hot brew and went down very well with a little maple syrup and milk.

Filtration on the French press wasn't good enough to give it a sludge free finish (but wasn't expecting it to tbh) so I decanted it twice.

Overall, a nice drink, but whether it's worth the volume of grounds, I'm undecided. I'm going to knock up another brew, but hot, and chill down as a comparison.

Just received my pot today, so I've filtered a batch which is now sitting in the fridge ready for sampling this evening.

I have been doing this for years in a french press, definitely no need for a specific pot.

It gives a very different flavour than hot brew IMO and loses a lot of bitterness, I warm mine up in the microwave and it works a treat.

For iced Coffee, freeze dried is the the way to go IMO (the only time I really enjoy freeze dried) simply put the granules in a cocktail shaker with ice, milk and any syrup/sweetener and shake that sucker up.

Edit: oh and yeah, I have to echo the replies to Jizza..... Adding hot water completely defies the logic of this process... Which is to extract the coffee oils slowly at low temperature for a desired final result that hot extract can't offer.

New to this so purchased a cold brew coffee pot made for the job. Looking forward to trying it tonight!

This thread reminds me of a conversation from early 2014..

Neither were lots of folk. But why should that stop it from reminding me of an old conversation?

It shouldn't, I was just interested to know how the old conversation went....

More a generic Coffee conversation, the bit that triggered my memory was the cold extract and the fact PJ brought it up here... Yet he feigned disinterest and jested with mild dismissal as only PJ can when it was previously brought up.

I didn't drink coffee back then Marc so the disinterest would have been genuine. Cold brewed coffee seems to have gained a lot in popularity in the last year.

Have you discoverd a love for coffee then? Or just found a method your happy with?

Having realised that it went so well with cigars I taught myself to like it after 56 years of not drinking it. I still need it with sugar though. The same method doesn't seem to work for alcohol though much to MLW's relief.

While we're on it, cold extract makes a decent coffee syrup for baking. Get a pan of cold extract on the hob and heat gently to reduce slightly, add a good amount of sugar (to taste) and melt into the liquid.

Once cooled you can store it in bottles almost indefinitely and add it to cake mix etc.

Im sure some of the good cooks on here such as PJ could whip up a great cappuccino cake or mocha macaroon with it.
