  • Cubans that are good when smoked young?

It seems there?s a general consensus that CCs don?t smoke particularly well when young, but are there any exceptions?

Let?s say ?young? is anything up to 6 months old and that inclusion doesn?t mean that said stick won?t further improve with age, just that it doesn?t need age to smoke well.

Sub-question: does anybody know of any Cuban manufacturers that put considerable age on their sticks before sending to shops? (similar to Padron in the NC world who I believe age their premium stuff for 1-2 years in their factories before sending out (hence the higher prices)).

Not wanting to hijack this thread already but I'd also want to know how you know how old your cigars are when you buy them. Just seems to me that it's hard to say "young" when I've no idea of the age of anything in my humidor

For Cubans you've got a box date but also following the above question you would want to know how long they have rested for at the factory which I believe is between 4-12 weeks?

So, to that end... I could have a October 2015 box that was rolled in July, so by Christmas they are 6 months old?

The list could become exhaustive if brands age for different Vitolas!

Like npalfrey said if you buy a box it will have a date on the bottom
if buying singles the tobacconist should be able to tell you the year from which box he picked your singles from.

It's up to you realy to ask the year of the cigars when your buying
if buying in tubes stick a sticky label on the tube with the year and month
or if not in tubes make a note on a pad.

The smaller Cubans should smoke well with at least a year on them. Behike are fine out the box. A couple years+ will see a Cuban smoke well

I'm sure they have a couple of years on them before they're boxed. almost like the anejados.

I found fresh Bolivars from 2014 to be lovely, can't go wrong with a BBF of any age in my eyes!

Cubans that are good when smoked young?

Bhk aren't pre aged RE, LE, reserva and gran reserva use aged tobacco but not aged after rolling. Most petite corona sizes smoke reasonably well young. Onto your sub question there is only one cuban manufacturer and generally they don't pre age the exception being the anejado line that started last year to poor reviews.

I'd echo points regarding the PCs (and TPCs) in that they smoke acceptably. I've found that revisiting a box of Bolivar PCs with about 20 months on them, that I actually preferred them younger as there was more strength of flavour. I personally liked that. The handful of under 12 months old cigars that I have smoked over the last year or so have been acceptable but have always given away their youth towards the last third: bitterness being one trait. Whilst there is a lot of opinion supporting Cubans can now generally be smoked young, I still feel that a minimum of twelve months helps the cause, and even then we've got to suck it and see

I smoked a Bolivar Royal Coronas last month out of a box dated April 2015 which was good. I expect they'll get even better with time, which is nice.

Or buy dot stickers and write date on. Some people even us biro to write the year on the cap. It's being cut off anyway so no drama.

I smoke LGC ned4 with no age or less than a year and they're yummy. By the time the box is smoked they're starting to change anyway.
As a side note, you can nearly always fond a box of what you want with a year on it and depending on brand you can find older. Just ask your vendor for a box code list and pick from that.
