I just though I better check out the bar thread, maybe someone is discussing tea there... :-)

I have a fine tea business indeed and we just won three stars for both our matcha teas at the Great Taste Awards. (only 100-150 out of 10k products get 3stars)

If you want matcha, don't try to save money and make sure it's from Japan. They produce on a different level and you won't get good match for cheap money. Even though the grinding is automatic, it takes 1h to grind 40g of matcha, otherwise the friction produces too much heat and the flavours go.

Try some good standard matcha at first to see how you like it and if you do, go and get some ceremonial grade for an intense creaminess.

I just had some Korean Yellow Tea with my Juan Lopez, which is a perfect fit as the tea is full bodied and has a sweetness to it that accompanies most cigars very well.

Not sure if this is against forum rules. If you like to try ours, send me a PM or use our contact form and I give you 10% off. ;-)

How important is the whisk? Is there an alternative to the traditional drinking set, or is it required?

I have to admit to being very partial to a good weak cup of tea with my cigar. Keeps everything nicely lubricated without overpowering the stick.
Niela's teas look very interesting and I shall look at them in more detail when I next need to stock up.

My current supplier is the delightful Postcard Teas just off the top of Bond street. some beautiful Darjeelings http://www.postcardteas.com/site/

I'm also very partial to Whittard Afternoon Blend, but there aren't that many stores around now https://www.whittard.co.uk/tea/type/...e-leaf-tea.htm

You can get by with a normal whisk as well. For someone who wants to try matcha, you can do without. If you find a liking to it, I would definately recommend getting a proper bowl and whisk. The whisk gives you a really nice frothy top, almost like milk foam and is part of the delight.

Also don't forget to use little water and sieve the matcha before you put it in the bowl, to break up clumps. That helps when you can't make the froth.

postcard tea is a very good shop. One of the few that I see as a competitor in quality and exclusivity. Most teas you get in the UK are the equivalent to a ?2.80 non cuban cigar that has been stored outside a humidor for too long. We try to specialize in top quality. Postcard Tea is definitely up there as well. They have more Chinese teas (which we don't stock yet) and we have teas from Japan, Korea and Taiwan.

Seek out a good Middle Eastern food store, you'll get good quality loose tea of various flavours without the 'specialist' or 'gourmet' price tag that gets added on in regular stores. Iranian cardamom tea is good. Not sure about Japanese tea but I know that some pay thousands for specialist green teas that are used in the tea making ceremonies.

Heres a pic of me drinking Bedouin tea on a recent trip to the Wadi Rum desert in Jordan. Loose black tea with the addition of sage, other mountain herbs and lots of sugar.. Delicious.
