I know this has been discussed previously, I've also seen the article recently published by Nic.

I want to insure my collection primarily against theft, but then also ideally against things like (water) damage, fire (not smoking!) and have even seen beetle damage mentioned.

My question is, who had insurance on their collection? Who is is with? How much did it cost? And how did you do it?

On moneysupermarket price comparison for specified items, there is a section for 'Curios' under which I think cigars would be covered. It generates a quote with a few companies, so I think I need to call them to make sure they're actually insured as obviously it's generated a quote based off a generic 'Curios' entry.

As far as I'm aware I don't have such a thing on my house policy but will be interesting to see what you come up with.

Spoke to esure, they said they would do it. Everything needs to be properly inventoried and stored properly but I imagine that's fairly normal.

Make sure that you only believe what is written in the paper documentation and not necessarily what you are being told. Understand the terms and exclusions. All insurance policies are not created equally and cheap insurance is cheap for a reason

In a years time if you need a claim, you don't want to be arguing about what some person who may or may not work there anymore told you was covered.

It also might be worth checking out WHICH or some other independent report of the company your thinking about. In my experience and from advice from my partner who is in insurance "You pay more for a smoother claim process and a higher payout rate with less exclusions."

Have to agree on this - experience with dealing with travel insurers, both at the opposite ends of the spectrum, but aside from Which, any other ways to tell who's good and who's not? As you say, the insurance is worthless if they wriggle out of settling and make it a protracted affair.

          Will check the wording carefully.
