But seriously, the contribution that olfaction makes to flavour/taste is irrefutable. Just simply try holding your nose when eating or drinking anything and see/taste the difference.

From what I gather, Sainsbury's "Taste the Difference" range of food and beverages labelling states on the back 'Do not hold your nose whilst eating or drinking this product'
Jalerious Valetudoguy.... .. I use this technique more often to those mild cigars that don't have much strength. Some of them they seem not having any remarkable taste until passing through the nose.

As Valetudoguy comments normally the nose does not need to be forced to participate, but I agree with cj121 as many cigars, normally old increase the enjoyment if forced to pass by.

I retro every puff. It's got to the stage where I'm just not interested in a cigar if it's painful to retrohale.

I blow out from mouth then take some heavily diluted smoke back in through nose! Barbarians!

I retro hale every cigar that I smoke at least once. If the cigar is to young it usually stings and I stop. Aged and/or mild cigars I retro quite a lot.

Im like tommy. I taste almost nothing unless i retro. Do it on almost every puff. I guess my taste buds are useless because i get almost no flavour in the mouth at all.

Is there not a difference in the action? When eating you chew and breathe therefore the odorant molecules in the food pass over the olfactory receptors. Smoking a cigar is a very different as you are purposefully avoiding inhaling any smoke into the lungs.

Some folks inhale cigars and all smokers inhale small quantities inadvertently I suspect

Certainly changes the flavour deliberately inhaling and not for the better

I find retro haling hurts my nose the following day.

I retrohale every puff, specifically I blow out 2/3 of the smoke from my mouth, and then the last 1/3 from my nose. I do find that more flavours reveal themselves this way.

Though I echo what some people have said about retro strong NCs - burning pepper and a sense of eye watering pain...not cool!
Only the impossible is worth the effort.

This is what I do as well.

I sometimes retro the entire mouthful, but only in the first third where the smoke tends to be significantly cooler/milder than further on.
