    Hello Everyone,

I'm Mark from Cheshire, new member, been smoking cigars and sipping cognac since my wedding last year, a real gentlemen's pastime. everything ive learnt (and i'm still just scrapping the surface..was from the internet, then chatting to salesmen at my local cigar stockist, but what i found the most effective was the trail and error of putting what i liked and didn't like into practise the experience..different ways of lighting, cutting, smoking. my favs up to now are bolivar's and padrons..but i know i have so much more to explore. i spend around ?50/60 a month, and i have just bought a 2014 Bolivar Super Coronas (limited editions) and i'm also a super av geek, and i am a distinguished member of avforums (same member name golden phoenix).

my local cigar stockist has just opened a gentleman's club (no not that type) ... but a place in Liverpool called the puffin rooms..were you can sample all sorts of whiskies and spirits and a cigar at the same time (they also have jazz and blues music going on) so im looking forward to exploring that with friends. not sure if they have places like that across the country but there's certainly not many places that i know of up north!

i'm looking to chat and learn from the connoisseurs on here.

i need to explore humidors next, as well as the cigars, and i'm open to cigar recommendations. everyone tends to go with cubans at first as that's what people who don't smoke hear of first with all the Italian gangster movies lol..but other regions must be able to make a great cigar too.

    anyway hello everyone!

Welcome to the forum Mark, I'm sure everyone will make you feel welcome here. Pardon my ignorance but what is av? As for cigars Cuban's are thought of first with good reason, they're the best . That's not to say there are not also very good cigars from elsewhere but IMO there's just something special about Cuba, maybe it's the weather and soil or perhaps the centuries of knowledge and perfecting techniques

currently i'm having issues with a basic guillotine clipper i have, i have to really push hard and its unravelling the very bottom of my cigar occasionally, any thoughts on a better way of cutting the ends? or should i just invest more money on a decent clipper (the one i have was only a fiver) .

Better pay a little more and get a two-bladed or a V-cut cutter from Xicar or Colibri. Those work perfectly (most of the time).

Welcome to the forum. With your basic cutter, try wetting the end before cutting it by sucking on it gently and see if that helps. If you are into this hobby for the long-term, a decent cutter will be a worthwhile investment - I really like my colibri v cutter FWIW.

All this talk of wetting the end and sucking slowly I thought I'd stumbled into the wrong forum

You may also be cutting all of the cap off, try just snipping the end. That being said if you're using a blunt blade no amount of technique could make up for it.

If you try all the advice and still it's no better then IMO the Credo scissors are great for the cost if you want a budget option, if you think you'll be in this for the long haul then you can't go wrong with the above recommendations of Xikar and Colibri.

Welcome Golden Phoenix! Risen from the (cigar) ashes??! (groan).
People will correct me, but I think the Puffin' Rooms is a venture (at last in part) by our sponsor y/n?

                        Welcome along

I agree Cubans are the best, that's not to say all Cuban are good and all NC are bad though

The best advice in terms of recommendations is what you're already doing, try as many as you can. Generally I say try petit coronas of each brand and then branch out from there based on what you enjoyed, also just because you didn't enjoy something first time, don't write it off, try going back to it six months later, for example, I didn't think Cohiba was anything special at first, but now they are one of my favourite brands (although still a special occasion smoke in view of the price)

Hello and welcome good sir! You seem to have a handle on what you're doing and this is the best place to learn the things you don't.
I've seen some adverts for the puffin rooms and have been considering a road trip to have a look-see as it is exactly the kind of place I'd love to spend an evening!

Hello Mark I'm guessing you have been to the Turmeaus shop in Knutsford. I always drop in when passing and have a smoke upstairs.

I have also been to the Turmeaus in Liverpool several times, again when passing. It is very comfortable not been to the Puffin yet !

The Turmeaus in Chester is also worth a visit.

Each of these shops stocks quality cutters and humidors for most budgets and the staff could point you in the right direction.
