  • Dark And Light Wrapper Leaf

Is there a difference in the smoke if the wrapper of Cuban cigars is darker rather than those with a lighter wrapper.

I don't notice a particular different to be honest, unless it a maduro wrapper

I find those really dark Cuban wrappers taste bitter, I dont like them.

Give me a lighter colour anyday, but not green and not really pale.

I find wrapper makes a difference but I'm usually looking for an oily wrapper with a nice sheen rather than just a dark wrapper over a light one.

The wrapper colour is no guide to cigar flavour, body or strength. It depends on the overall blend. Some maduro wrapped cigars are mild whilst some light connecticut are strength and flavour bombs.

The wrapper does affects the taste because unlike the rest of the cigar we taste it with our lips. For some reason I don't like Maduros as they don't taste good to me, slightly better when they are 10yo but not much. I have heard said the wrapper makes up 5% of the overall flav but then that's quite high when I chlorinate the pot water at work, any fool can detect it at 0.5ppm (parts per million). The wrapper also gives us the visual perception of the smoke & by the colour & feel (oily/dry ecy) already prepares our mind how previously similar cigars have smoked. This is what makes blind tasting cigars so difficult.
So in conclusion, the wrapper has a small effect on the smoke & body but does affect the taste & appreciation of the cigar - I have had a few decent smokes with awful looking wrappers but your immediately put off them so they have to be rather good to overcome that.
