  • Custom Rolls - whats your view?

Last evening I finally got some custom rolled cigars tucked up in their new humi home after their chilling, freezing, thawing cycle. They arent coming out until they are through puberty.

It gave me an opportunity to really go over each stick with a careful eye. While the construction is really very good , and the wrapper shade is a near perfect match across the ten sticks, two sticks had something a little less exacting about them than the BHK 52's they are mimicking.

So it got me thinking... there are at least four sources of well reputed custom rolled CC's that most of us could spin up an order with pretty rapidly. And a couple of these are currently touting 'BHK' 'Talisman' etc etc... where others have their own selection of vitolas and names. So why do we buy what must be the most high risk of sticks to purchase...

I am drawn to custom rolls by the appeal of something different, a modest price differential, and a vitola that I enjoy. For reasons best known to the gods, I also like having a 'custom roll only' humi...

What makes you go for them?

Custom Rolls - whats your view?

I?m not a fan of custom rolls really and have seen far too many fallouts in various cigar groups when it turns out the provenance isn?t as touted.

The main issue I have is when they are touted as BHK, Talisman etc rather than by the factory name.

That said, Monsdales are absolutely fantastic smokes and probably the only custom rolls I?d buy.

I've had some BHK 54 which weren't bad. Some others as well but they were gifts from friends and I have no idea what they were called or who rolled them. I will meet a friend in LA next week who blended his own cigar and had a handful of bundles rolled by some master roller. Looking forward to try one of these.

I never had a Monsdale but would love to try one.

I've got no idea where to get them from ATM other than one foreign source that always has some listed by vitola only.

I jumped on the Shamz Rolls because of this.

I do have one custom roll from the Atlantic Bar and Grill 2004! The other one of these I smoked ages ago and it was great! Here's the vid of the roller https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B5n...ew?usp=sharing

Now... having your own blend made up would be seriously appealing!!!

Yes, he discussed blending cigars with PK (KSA) and did a lot of reading on the subject. Then had his own blend made. It was rather expensive because he only used the best tobacco available including some medio tiempo.

It?s an interesting concept . I think I would rather not know this was suppose to be rolled like ... bhk etc . Just take it for what it is .

I havnt had any custom rolls but hopefully in the future if there is something put in place

The two sources I've used are only because of recommendations and there frequent trips back to Cuba.

Just wanted to try them...and see how they are...I've only tried the supremo and vigia CR.

I know that Supremo's wasn't going to be the el 2014...but it was a fantastic cigar imo and glad it bought a few of peejay.

Price and taste is a factor for me...if they are nice tastey cigars and a affordable price...i say way not

Ie the talisman cr...worked out to be about ?13 and the official is approx ?50....if i liked the tailiamns Cr I'd rather by 10 of these than 2 real ones for the the same money..

But with the recent CR drama on Facebook does make my warry of where I'd place an order from.

I've tried the Monsdale and it was an outstanding smoke

But I still steer clear of custom rolls, I really don't see in practice how they have anymore provenance than cigars from a beach seller who knows someone who works work in a factory. Established sellers on groups have been caught selling NC cigars as CC custom rolls afterall

I got some for the first time from Shamz and they were fantastic so far. I guess the idea to get a cigar that is either the real deal at a great price, or something unique and wonderful (hopefully).

I would take a box of each if one could be sure its the same, but that's the risk.

And pretty much every single aspect of this makes it so irresistible.!

Thinking about it. I'd much rather be there watching the Torcedor doing their thing. Smoke one. Pick up a handful or two there and then!

Unless you know. And I mean know where they are coming from. Might as well buy anything that smokes nice anonymously!

Every time I read someone saying how great a smoke was it goes on my list anyway lol #sucker

Now I've not heard of a roller in the UK for years!

I?m all for them, although having to rely on being named after banded cigars is a bit of a shame, I guess they need that to make them desirable.

I have smoked hundreds (maybe 500) custom rolled cigars over the years ... most by santo (until he retired) and since he quit almost all by Alex .

mostly I was there as santo/Alex rolled them .

i like em ... fresh/young cigars I smoke when I go to Cuba and look forward to this experience (don?t smoke many young cigars at home) ... bring some home that are usually gone by may .

of note ... santo and Alex just call their smokes by whatever size they are (marevas or robustos etc) .

I agree with your comment about names but the recent Talisman sized/shaped ones are a bit of a quandary because its a unique vitola. Otherwise they should be called by their vitolas or something appropriate like Eric Mons' lonsdales being called Monsdales.
