Just ordered my first pipe and sampler and was wondering do you have a preferred pipe shape, straight, bent etc and if so why.

A bent Rhodesian briar pipe is my favourite shape. My favourite tobacco at the moment is SG Best Brown Flake. This pipe is an Ashton. Marc

Expecting delivery today it's a DB Mariner billiard bent pipe with 4 Dunhill samplers also purchased tamper and pipe cleaners. If I enjoy I think I will need pipe rotation do you think the higher price range pipes are vastly superior to mid range price pipes in your experience

You can get cheaper pipes that smoke very well and expensive pipes that are poor quality smokers. However, in general, I think that higher prices mean better quality pipes and generally these tend to be better to smoke. Although, for very expensive pipes like Dunhill, the price does not really reflect the quality. They have become collectors items thus, like many expensive cigars, are bought for their name rather than being outstanding pipes.

I have been toying with the idea of getting a churchwarden, my inner hobbit tells me I need one.

I chose this pipe based entirely on its appearance, as well as the fact the maker seemed pretty cool. It has become my favourite as it also smokes well and sits nicely so can be smoked hands free while fishing!

My favourite shape is a bent Apple, followed by the bent Bulldog and Rhodesian.

I do however enjoy a small straight Apple, Billiard or Pot for quick samples or very short sessions.

You can get very good pipes for cheap, espeacially visual 2nds or estate pieces.

Oh, I forgot. Calabash and Dublin are great shapes that I think people should always try.

I also have a Churchwarden and I would highly recommend it for hot burning and sweet, flavoured tobacco.
