So why do cigarette smokers flick the ash off as soon as possible but cigar smokers try and keep as long an ash as possible?
In my experience having ash that's too long is a pain particularly when not just sitting there smoking.
Not convinced there's a real benefit other than trying to be different from cigarettes.
    Thoughts?

I do not try to keep an ash as long as possible, I let it go when it is ready.
The ash on a cigarette will not affect the smoke so by keeping it longer than necessary they are only increasing the risk of dropping ash on themselves?

I found that a long ash can reduce the volume of smoke produced from a cigar or makes the drawer more resistant. Not really night and day.

I thought the ash was primarily involved in helping to control the 'cherry' from burning too hot? With a long ash, you can always force the ash to break, by blowing through the cigar, as opposed to taking a draw. The ash will break easily the next time you set the cigar down....

I'm not a long ashes guy most of the time. Sure, if the ash is tight and holds on pretty well I give it a try from time to time but I know that it will eventually land on my shirt or pants. Thus I mostly flip it off once it reaches a certain lenght.

i dont do the long ash thing.

I tend not to bang my cigar on the ashtray to remove the ash though - of fear of breaking the wrapper !

I find skinny cigars the ash drops more readily, so I dont let it get long. For fat cigars, an inch or more of ash is easy. Whether it adds any benefit I dont know, sometimes tapping off early can ruin the burn though.

Indeed, carrying 1/2 -1"+ of ash enables a more even burn, protecting the hot coal but 2" is probably pushing it. Some people can manage 4-5" but although it's amusing, I don't think it's desirable.

Like many, I tend to let nature take its natural course and let it fall when ready.
