Bmi is a crock.... despite my more luxuriant and padded form, i’ve been considered obese or worse on the bmi scale since i was 16/17. And until my early twenties i was c10% body fat or less. In more recent time its a fair cop.... but if you carry a decent amount of muscle mass, ditch bmi as a measure of well being. Body composition can be more accurately measured these days.... thats stuff worth paying more attention to.... as well as the usual checkups your GP will do regarding blood pressure cholesterol blood sugar etc etc etc

Unfortunately my waistline agrees with my BMI

I agree with everything in moderation, & as Oscar Wilde said 'And moderation in moderation!'

fats.jpgI was similarly disposed to thoughts on BMI until I had a DVT/PE last July... since then I have lost 4 stones, stopped eating so much fat, very little sugar, no alcohol...I feel amazingly better. I want to lose another 2 - 3 stone.

I'd say it's all down to you.

You being able to stick to what slimming world tell you to do!

Worked when I told myself what to do and I stuck to it. But now I'm not paying any attention to myself. Weights creeping up again.....

My weight has been steady all my life, in fact I have always eaten what I wanted & never gained weight - to the point I thought I never would. My father was told be the doctor to gain weight as it's actually - wait for it - healthier to be half a stone overweight than half a stone under. However he never managed it & when he got the big C, he suffered from not having anything he could afford to lose

I blame mother dearest, she kept us on war style rations although the 70's. as a 15yo teenager I asked for an extra fish finger as I only had two & my father had three. My mother swiped at me, 'your Father brings home the bacon, that's why he gets more than you.' 'OK', said I, 'then given him five & me four, as a teenage lad needs more protein then a sedentary middle aged male.' Ha! Let's just say, even though we lived above the Spar shop my Father owned, we never had too much to eat. When I joined the RN, the other lads moaned about the quality of food, 'Yes it's crap' I agreed 'but you can go around again for seconds!'

I think that's the danger of obese children, once they have got in the habit of eating too much & the wrong foods by the time they are fending for themselves, its a tough habit to break.
There is food available nearly 24hrs a day on an oil rig but I managed not to put weight on or what I did, I evened out at home but when we started cruising I noticed the difference. Once you have paid for all that food, you feel you have to at least have a decent portion every day & of course there's the alcohol as well. The first cruise took a couple of months to shift but the last one's weight gain really didn't want to shift & I was having two hot meals a day on the rig,

Since March, I have just had one cooked meal day & had salad in the evening & exercised. Haven't really denied myself anything but walking 4km on the treadmill & then rowing a couple more seems to do the trick. Now I feel fit enough to row a boat around the lochs of Bute on my fishing hols, starting Friday - wish me luck!

                          Good luck.

When im in the flight deck the food they offer is is crap. Crisps, Choccy, sweets, muffins, you name it. You couldn't feed sedentary people worse food. Then the main meals...salty, sweet, Carb loaded.

I cant wait to retire. I've been off work since last July and have never been healthier in twenty One years.
