  • Cohiba Shorts

So a quick review for a short cigar the Cohiba Shorts, being a fan of the RYJ Puritos, and the Monte Puritos I thought why not give these a go, afterall its Cohiba and the clubs are quite popular.

Its actually much smaller than I was expecting, smell typical Cuban smell very hay/grassy smell, pre light draw a tobacco sweetness along with that hay profile so far so good. Onto the smoke, it lit fine, plumes of smoke for such a little stick, however taste wise very disappointing and I'm not expecting much, yes the cuban grass flavour is there but within 5 minutes it got harsh Cafe Creme level harsh.

OK maybe not quite that bad but for a cuban mini I expect that quality even with something like a Purioto or Mini as I have from RYJ and Monte, this wasnt great yeah it fine for 10 minute smoke but seriously a better quick Cuban fix can be had with RYJ and Monte selctions for smaller cigars, for what I paid for the shorts, you would be better to get a pack of RYJ petit Julietas or H Upman Corona J in a similar price range in all honesty.

It's sad really because Cohiba can be great but my last few samples from them have been disappointing.

I received a pack free with a purchase of several boxes and thought the same as you when I tried one, I threw the other nine into the back of the humi and forgot about them. When I rediscovered them over a year later and tried one it couldn’t have been more different, a very tasty smoke with lashings of typical cohiba honey.

It seems age, like in all long filler cohiba, can really make a difference.

Indeed and if this was any other type of Cohiba I would not be so quick to dismiss, but this is meant to an addition to Cohiba Club mini range so an expectation to be ready to smoke out the box is somewhat expected don't you think? As I said in my review for the price I paid, I'd rather buy two boxes of RYJ Puritos or Montes Puritos and they have the added bonus of being ready out the box, and they will also improve with age. My point is this Cohiba invokes a certain expectation the Cohiba Clubs certainly live up to the name and again also improve with age. So while I take your point I think its a cop out in this instance. Paying 20.00 for what is meant to be the quick cuban fix better than the other cuban quick fixes its lacking.

It was disappointing and has evoked such a reaction because I know first hand how good Cohiba can be, like I said for the Same Price of these Mini I could have bought a pack of RYJ Petit Julietas, or the Corona J by H Upman which are somewhat more substantial and fantastic smokes and ready to go from the start but as you say like all long filer does better with age. It's disappointing and I'll let them get there age but I wont be buying them again, as for me it doesnt do what a mini should do.

All very good points and these certainly aren’t something I’d buy, the format is just not for me. That being said I was impressed once they had rested a year.

Like you said though for the price you’d expect better right out of the box.

Did these age fine in their little sealed plastic bags then or did you take them out of those?

I threw them in the humidor as is, to be honest I didn’t really plan on revisiting them.

Cheers I’ll probably try one at some point but do the same otherwise. Wasn’t sure if the sealed packs would prevent/slow ageing

I smoke these from time to time. They were OK when I first had them but when I've revisited them I've found them to be a satisfying quick little smoke.
