  • Getting to Andorra

Ive just looked at the cost of flight to Andorra and its very good (90 quid ish). However, that is actually to Toulouse which then requires a car hire to Andorra per se. Some warnings then flashed up saying that the car hire company doesn't allow cross border travel into Andorra.

Has anyone done this trip? How easy is it? Or is it easier to just swallow the 900 mile drive? I did this on honeymoon twenty nine years ago...it was fun then when I wore a younger man's suit...

    Getting to Andorra

F... the car hire company and just drive. Never tell them that you?re going to Andorra. If you book a car on line you also usually cover insurance through there and it doesn?t restrict border crossing.
I fly to Barca rent a car for 25 quid a day and they ask if I?m going to Andorra, and I just answer never in a million years, what should I do there?[emoji41]
One piece of advice though: stuff as many people in the car as possible- 75 smokes each makes a great haul. Customs officers especially the french are tough and meticulous, so I?d not advice smuggling.

But if you have an accident in Andorra and you've stated that you won't be going there, your insurance will be fucked surely !?!? Sounds risky

Valid argument there Steve but two points contradict this will actually happen:
1 (and most Important): renting cars today on the internet gets you through a multinational rental platform and its with this issuer that you will have your insurance covered, if their terms do not stipulate that border crossing is forbidden, then you?re good to go.

2: I have never ever anywhere not been allowed to cross borders in a rental car unless paying extra. EXCEPT when renting a car in Barcelona they ask if you?re going to Andorra (some times) - I am 100% convinced they do this ONLY to try and convince you there should be an extra fee. They ie never ask if your going to drive to France [emoji41]

I've been to Andorra a few times now, hiring cars in both BCN (Barcelona El-Prat) and GRO (Barcelona - Girona). It's about an extra 50 Euro on the hire cost for visiting Andorra. The first time I did it I didn't know better but I've made sure I'm covered every time since. My take is that ignorance won't be a defence if I have an accident.
Last visit I was pulled over at Spanish customs, leaving Andorra. They seemed more interested in alcohol until I started pulling boxes of cigars out of my back pack to reach the 1L bottle at the bottom. :/
