  • Dilemma or Ridiculous?

When I first got into cigars not so long ago, It was basically with petit coronas RJ and Montes. Boxes of 10. I really enjoyed them and started trying different sticks.

25s of H Upmann Majestics, Fonseca Delicas and a couple mixed boxed 2s of Cuban petit robustos later. I quickly dropped the coronas in favour of the robustos. Taste, smell, size, time and overall enjoyment.

I found Late Hour robustos, AJ last Call and Monte petit Edmundos ? and over and over again have just taken me to a different place, a real sweet spot.

Now, I haven?t tried a whole lot more than above. A few samplers of both CC & NC but nothing really does it for me like the small robustos.

I know there are many, many sticks available and I will eventually get to try my fair share. What im asking is?.. in your opinions, are small robustos going to be my thing?

The best cigar I have smoked to date is the late hour robusto. At 5? its literally 1? too long for me and if the profile didnt change, i wouldnt smoke it to the end. Next is the Monte Petit Edmundo but doesn?t have the flavour or construction of the late hour but still perfect.

Its far from a dilemma and I will try more. I don?t get the time or opportunity to smoke a lot and maybe this is the wrong word, but I don?t want to ?waste? what time I have on a bitter, side burning, overwhelming or tight smoke!

I hope that I?ll look back at this post in years to come and laugh at my inexperience. However, does my current preference say anything? For example is my taste NC as petit Edmundos seem to be the one CC that hits the spot - ridiculous?

ETA: I stopped having a Whisky with a cigar when I favoured the small robustos. And find myself drooling on my keyboard looking at Davidoffs

    Dilemma or Ridiculous?

I think the upshot is that while you enjoy a smaller Robusto at the moment, it?s because it fits into your current circumstances and demands on your time. In the future this will likely change with differing work/family commitments so the time you afford yourself to enjoy a cigar will again change.

This change will could therefore make other vitola?s more attractive but it also may not.

As for taste and flavour preferences, that?s always going to be on a slight change. Where you are, who you are with and the atmosphere surrounding the cigar smoking experience undoubtedly has an effect on the enjoyment of the cigar.

When you are new to it all (I consider myself a novice for sure) it?s like a kid in a sweet shop with so much choice out there. It can be overwhelming and you end up buying all sorts of different things to try then realise, ?what?s the rush??. This hobby/passion/addiction isn?t about doing things fast paced, it?s likely to remain a hobby/passion/addiction for the rest of your life so take the journey as it comes and don?t feel like you need to/are leaning towards one type of cigar.

Your comment about reflecting on this in the future I think will be true.

    Enjoy the journey.

When I started, I favoured petit coronas. After some trial and error ( and a trip to the states, which really opened my eyes to the NC world) I favoured robustos, but found they didn't hit the spot as much as the smaller ring gauges.

Will this change, maybe, but look forward to trying new things again.

Fingers crossed Cuba produces some more petit coronas

I’ve tried all sorts but always revert back to robustos.

There was was a time when robusta was considered a large cigar.

I started on Robustos and still do love them, but I have found myself gravitating more and more towards both Pyramid and more lately Lancero sizes - as when both styles are done right they are bloody fabulous! A good BBF can't fail to impress - well it does it for me

Not a dilemma - there's definitely something to be said for the short robustos! I'm a big fan of the Montecristo Petit Edmundos, they're a consistently great cigar in my view. I bought a box of Petit #2s a wee while ago and going to try out one tomorrow...looking forward to that. If you're looking for recommendations for similar sized cigars, you should try the Partagas D5...

Petite robustos are a bit of a sweet spot. Shorter smoke time. Not too fat. Enough room for more leaves for more blends. They are one of my goto vitolas these days for sure.

All in all a very convenient size. #modernlife

I recommend the gloria cubana d5. Still readily available and a really top smoke.

Hoyo PR is excellent any time, & the others are all good too, just pick them on the occasions you don't have time for a longer smoke or as a starter or you can feel a little unsatisfied IMHO.
