  • Cigar smoking in the UK

Having been here now for the last 12 days I must say I?m pretty upset about how Britain has become in terms of smoke acceptance.
I have now been to 5 different hotels and a good number of pubs and to say the least, I?m quite astounded: I have not been to a single place where you can smoke inside (I can understand and accept that) and on top of that you have to look for the needle in the hay stack to find a seating area outside where you?re also allowed to smoke.
I?m currently at a posh country hotel and golf club, - they?re all staring at me and my VR like I?m farmer Joe, - hell don?t even golfers smoke cigars any more???
There are quite a lot of smokers in the UK, but has intolerance taken over completely?

I don't think they're are many cigar smokers left in the UK. I've honestly encountered none in Edinburgh or Aberdeen except in places like CASC or Hotel du Vin, both of which are dedicated places.

I often sit in crowded beer-gardens in Edinburgh and haven't encountered a single cigar smoker in the last 10-15 years...

No one bothers if I light up though as beer-gardens are often full of cigarette smokers.

Welcome to the nanny f*****g state! Sugar tax, no salt in your food and smokers are pariahs.

          It's certainly a minority sport.

I've not smoked much around such establishments outside of London. I'd never ask. If smoking is permitted I'll light up a cigar.

Smoking inside is illegal here. There is exception for sampling. So this will only be at a specialist premium cigar shop effectively.

It's a rich man's game in London. I would have expected golf or posh hotels there would be a humidor though.

Saying that Mitchell has opened up stores in Norfolk and Chester. CASC seems active Oop very very North.

Abroad, even amoung old man sailing locations where there are loads of Americans and Italians I've never seen a cigar. Other than a Toscano or some such short cigar.

          Ho hum.

Yea smoking indoor days are over...and to be honest I don't mind that too much...ie I don't miss going to pub/club and having my cloths smell of smoke.

However most pubs out door area are fine...maybe that's around me.

Even in the DR I hardly saw anyone smoking a cigar

I'm hoping it's going to be a little different in London, I've found a few pubs in the city that have outdoor tables for smokers so hopefully I'll be able to utilise for a cigar.

And we all know how good the current love of tanning beds are for you!

I?m surprised you?ve struggled so much to be honest Henrik, I doubt you?ll find anywhere indoors but I?ve never struggled to find a smoking area in most pubs/bars that I can smoke in but yes you will get some looks. Admittedly it does vary city to city Edinburgh for instance is miles better than Glasgow for open air spaces to drink/smoke but that seems to relate to the different drinking laws mainly.

My wife and I were talking about this the other day. The smoking ban was coming in just as we were on one of our tours. I distinctly remember being able to smoke backstage in the Green Room, even on the side of the stage. Now completely obsolete.

Technically on stage is one of the few places where you can smoke indoors but it's a bit of a legal loophole and I don't know how people would react

It’s usually herbal cigarettes on stage; we used to come off stage and sit in the wings with a cigarette (kicked that habit years ago thankfully!) can’t imagine anyone doing anything of the sort these days!

I mostly smoke at home winding down in the garden. I do enjoy a cigar when I play golf a few times a year over the summer months and also when out with colleagues and friends on shoots. I've not experienced any less acceptance though I am smoking out in the open and often with like minded friends.
We tend to holiday in UK cottages and similarly I sit enjoying a cigar watching the sun set or whatever, so again no real change there. Likewise, while away on skiing trips in the Alps each year, no issues enjoying a cigar.
I keep promising myself a trip to a cigar bar like 10 Manchester Street (just seen that Churchill Bar no longer have a cigar menu?) but I still haven't got around to it..
