Getting Hot! ...and other q's

I was recently kindly gifted a pipe by [MENTION=13471792]glezga[/MENTION] and so far i have enjoyed it. being very new i have noticed the pipe getting very hot in the hand, almost to hot to hold. I must be doing something wrong. I have found its a very fine line in packing and lighting the pipe so it stays lit but doesnt get hot. so any advice is appreciated.

Also found i have to pack the tobacco really tight. I have used the three pinch method so fill & pack x 3, light, tamp and lite properly. also found tamping down at intervals down the bowl helps it stay alight

and while im at it any recommendations of a tobacco to try. I like most things cigar wise so what do you like?

Think you could be puffing constantly and too quick trying to not let the pipe go out.

It does tend to go out quite often, is that normal?

Probably packing the tobacco too tight so got no air to breath when packing a pipe with tobacco make sure it's not packed tightly but should be springy hope this helps

Filling the pipe is key here....The most reliable consistent method is the 3 fills method - as follows:-
1. Fill the pipe with loose strands of tobacco, make sure no clumps. Fill to the brim as if the pipe needs a hair cut.
2. Tamp the tobacco down gently until half-way full or just under half
3. Again loose strands fill the pipe on top until needing hair cut
4. Tamp down tobacco again a little bit firmer this time until two thirds pipe depth full
5. Third fill, loose strands until hair cut time.
6. Tamp down until level, or just below top of bowl.....
now two lights of the pipe......
7. First the false light - move flame across the whole surface of the tobacco, whilst taking gentle puffs...this is sucking air through tobacco to redistribute air pockets.
8. Keep puffing, don’t worry if the pipe goes out, the aim is to settle the tobacco. The tobacco may spring up slightly as hot air expands in the bowl....
9. Finally tamp again the tobacco/charred ash down and the tobacco will have a nice carbonised char to the top
10. Now this is the time to light the pipe proper. Flame all over the surface of the tobacco, whilst you suck the flame down gently to ignite the tobacco below the charred top.....hey presto! Pipe stays alight easily for the whole bowl if you got the fill just right...

when sucking on a pipe full of tobacco, there should be some resistance- akin to sucking water gently up a straw. If it feels like sucking on a milkshake, you’ve packed it too tight.....empty out the contents and start again ��

cheers for that, thats exactly what i have been doing so it seems its a very fine line. I think i have been packing too tight but its very airy on the draw. I will persaveer!!
