  • Trip to Havana on the cards

Anyone here been to Havana recently for a pilgrimage? I am looking to go to Havana without the misses if possible, as I am interested in Cuban cigars I thought it would make sense. I have this vision of salsa music playing in the background in some old run down bar, smoking many a fresh stick and drinking mojito,s all day long and maybe a Cigar tour or two to capture some product history. I have heard the foods crap so a great chance to loose a bit of weight whilst I am having fun and flights go direct from not far from me at LGW.

I was in Havana 2 summers ago. Great trip, but it cost me upwards of 40k quid in after payment

great, place. Don’t get your hopes up too high on finding hard to find sticks because there aren’t any, but you can smoke away in regular stock + a few new Cuba re releases.
check out FOH forum Cuba travel section for lots of info on casas particulares, Airbnb, taxis with cigar knowledge etc.

the food isn’t crap. There’s lots of good eating places with great food - so if you want to loose weight, swim 5 km in the sea every morning, smoke 10 cigars before lunch, drink less than one liter of rum pr day and stick to lobster tails morning, lunch and dinner. That should get you going.

That's a nice budget if you can afford it Thanks for the tips, I love an adventure & I don't mind slumming it for a few days.

Cigars are obviously a big part of any trip to Cuba, but the country in general is a great place to visit, but my wife and I are desperate to get back (but a fairly recent career changes and kids mean that might be a while yet!)

What I really want to do when I next go is a trip Vuelta Abajo to see the farms

In terms of food in Cuba, when we went we traveller round for the first week, and had a diet of rice, beans and chicken for a week (well, no chicken for Ieva as she's vegetarian), but we stayed in an all inclusive the second week and we thought the food was fantastic

I was out there this summer and you can easily do everything you?ve listed there. Unlimited mojitos for about ?5-6 in many bars but it really helps to have decent Spanish.

I would massively recommend casa?s to stay and would avoid hotels, a decent casa is better maintained and the food is generally better plus it?ll actually feel Cuban. Can send links to one particularly near the hotel nacional that is absolutely amazing and has one of the best hosts I found if it helps.

Money wise it?s incredibly cheap out there depending on how much you?re planning on buying in cigars!

It?s an absolutely fascinating county to visit, I?d encourage getting outside of Havana ( if you are research taxi collectivo?s if you want to do it on a budget). Food wise is a bit variable but if you stick to either proper Cuban food or they?re surprisingly alright at simple Italian, id avoid fancy restaurants as every one I tried was exactly the same food as the cheap places. Though certain places are of course known for their chefs

Cuban mojito bar prices (this was a tourist bar so far from the cheapest)
