  • The Cigar 'Scene'

Being fairly new to cigars, and having my mind opened to a world I had no idea existed, I'm just wondering what you guys think of how healthy the current cigar scene is?

Have any of you noticed it growing in popularity? Shrinking? Or just being roughly the same relatively small group of enthusiasts?

I've always joked that us smokers are a dying breed... In terms of cigarettes especially (myself included, full time vaper now). All the health concerns/tax have certainly reduced numbers there over the last few years. But how do cigar smokers compare?

UK or worldwide I suppose. Just curious to get your thoughts.

If anything it's grown in my 11-12 years of having partaken in the leaf, seems to go from strength to strength.

London stores seem to be cropping up everywhere, CGars keeps opening more and more shops, dozens of smoking terraces popped up in London way after the smoking ban, etc etc.

I'm pretty sure Habanos' numbers are still looking good too!

Judging from Instagram it seems to be doing well, I?ve noticed quite a few younger ?lifestyle? type of influencers popping up focusing their accounts around cigars along side fashion, cars etc.

I still can?t imagine lighting one up in a beer garden around South London though, everyone around here vapes.

Not looked on Instagram, I only really look at cigar related stuff on YouTube, and they're all American.

Trying to get some mates on the bandwagon though, proving a hard task so far lol

With the rising death toll in the States vaping may decline, five States have already banned it.

With the amount of people worldwide who are currently vaping, I'm sure there must be more at play to only have affected those 11 (I think I saw somewhere) people. Either they're ridiculously heavy and never breathe fresh air, or they weren't vaping the right stuff.

I'm still open minded when it comes to how safe it is though.

I think the alarm has been raised because they were reasonably young and vaping hasn't been around that long. I've not heard of any young people dying from cigar smoking, spread the word!

I was at a festival the other day, a new botl myself, smoking a fat (NC inca thing as it happened), and a bunch of yoots commented on it - 'big old cigar bro', and a few nods... Everyone knows they're cool, perhaps not at a PTA meeting though. Pick your audience.

I think the deaths were all linked to people vaping liquid containing THC.

Don?t spread the word too much, don?t want them becoming too popular and the prices going any higher!

Yeah it's not a cheap vice. Especially if you look at retail. The options are non premium cigars then. It's a tiny market really. Seems to me it's actually going super premium in the UK. Already has. So no don't see it growing much at all.

I expect if you go to a few events you'll see the same faces.

I confess I find the instagram cigar cult a little much. Even the 'cigar novice' is rarely seen without a travel case of at least x4 RE/LE/ LCDH double banders as the background to his daily smoke. And as we all know, well kept and modestly aged regular production is often phenomenal!

While I am quietly pleased that there is a steady push of people enjoying cigars and sharing the experience, I do find that it is propagating a lifestyle perception about cigars... the need to pair them with one or more of; high end spirits, wines, watches, a perfect view and location stamp, doesnt really reflect how most of us enjoy a cigar.... its all too posed... of course the majority of us plan to enjoy them on high days and holidays where we will also be enjoyin other fine things, but we also take them at our leisure whereever and whenever our leisure allows us! Ggarage, shed, cabin, park, garden, greenhouse etc... Pricing of cigars can be prohibitive, but if people feel they have to compete with/ keep up with ' a lifestyle' too I think they are likely to (sadly) miss out.

I convinced myself before I started that i could smoke cigars occasionally for no more than I used to spend on cigarettes. While I've clearly spent way more so far, they're all just sat in my humidor, so not actually 'spent' yet. And as long as I keep to one or two reasonably priced sticks on a weekend, it's probably not actually costing me a great deal more.

That's the way I see it, tend to save the more pricey ones for when I feel I can reward myself, and now the weathers turned, I imagine most of my larger and more expensive ones will be waiting for next summer

Personally I've not been in the game long but it seems a fairly split scene between those who just enjoy smoking and would rather do it out the way and those that trying for massive ashes and it's all about image and portraying wealth. Instagram very much feeds into the latter but I have no idea if it's growing or changing as the echo chambers the internet creates makes it very hard to tell real world shifts.
